Hi, My 306 has developed a continuous clicking noise which is coming from the around the front wheels/gearbox area. I cant hear it when the accelerator is being pressed but it is loud when gilding either in or out of gear.
The garage have no idea what could be causing it and advised to continue to drive it until it breaks down! Nice eh!
Does anyone have any ideas?

In my driving life, I've had two separate 'clicking from around the front wheels/gearbox area' incidences with front wheel drive cars.
1) Knackered driveshaft CV joint (cheap and easy to fix)
2) Broken gearbox layshaft bearing cage, leaving the balls to click against each other in the races. (Expensive)
Good luck

Is the noise affected by the direction of steering? What are the disks/pads like? Checked transmission oil in living memory?

Stones in the tyre treads?

When driving on a motor way look ar a similair car note the rotational speed of the wheel/tyre then listen to your noise and establish wether you have a once per revolution tick or something else. I would be looking for a nail or stone in a tyre a cracked weld in a steel wheel rim then worrk inwards to CV joints outer inner. Goto to a freindly garage and get them to put it on the road road brake tester so you can listen to the noise. Regards Peter

the same sort of noise was a 3" nail in the tyre for me. On the only car i've ever owned with decent, expensive tyres. Typical.

Ive checked the tyres and god I wish it was a nail as its starting to drive me mad.
Ive now noticed that the noise only occures when going forward?
