Well, look at that: a legitimate technical term has fallen foul of the automatic censor. You can guess what it is.

Roger
Probably better off wrapping some thin sheet metal round it rather than tape.

Might be being stupid here, but is this a pipe to fit over the end of your existing exhaust? If so, you are only talking 2 mm? Is it not a case of screwinga scrw from the outer pipe onto the side of the inner pipe to hold in place?
Thats what I did with my Mark 2 Escort many moons ago....
|
Weld a piece of steel around your original pipe to get the right thickness for your crome fancy tail pipe.
After you've done this the crome will tarnish, any ideas how to keep my 100mm tail pipe nice and shiny????

If you only want the extension, end piece, most independent parts places should help. There was a range offered in Thor auto cash n carry, near the car auctions in Peterborough, so if your local man buys from them, you may be lucky.
Don't forget the chrome plating place, up the road from me, here in Arlesey, behind Fairfield MoT garage, if you want to get REALLY carried away!!
It'll be interesting to see how the new shop gets on, I thought of doing something similar, with my yard, but couldn't convince myself we have a big enough shed to store those back to front baseball caps!!

Roger,
Is the exhaust 43mm od so you need a 43mm id trim? Straight or with a down angle? To add extra length or just smarten the existing?
Today I was standing by the biggest stock I've seen of these for ages, in place again tomorrow and I'll check them out for you.
No obligation, I'll look and report back.

Yes, 43mm OD (very slightly less, I think) needing 43MM ID trim, straight, and just to fit over the existing length.
Thanks.

OK... going out parts collecting later sometime and will report back by teatime.

Ha Ha.
Working in my unusual way (?) it suits to do the collection myself. 90% of the time I pre-purchase for work and am very little stressed with unexpected requirements in the middle of a job.
Also I can go years without hardly a wrong part. In fact the local trade factors commented on that recently. I didn't explain that it was mostly due to double checking their choice at the counter, as well as having a "popular part-number" database for every vehicle I look after.
Anyway must go out now tailpipe hunting.
Oh no Pumas left here Phil, giant Coypu hunted them all down!

Well that's half a dozen shops where I can't show my face for a bit....they'll remember the nutter who took id callipers and measured every trim pipe on the shelf!
As you say Roger...43mm just isn't about, loads of 41/45mm. The best I could do was a range with a 42mm size. I measured the id and it was pretty well spot on at a dead 42mm.
Still if you heated the chrome trim pipe in the oven and backed the Capri up to the freezer.....at least it wouldn't need the ugly securing screw.
Sorry not a 100% answer.

Bless you, M.M, for service beyond the call of duty. Where did you find the 42mm stuff?
|
42mm pipe trims were in a thriving car spares/acc' shop in Peterborough....might they fit with the oven/freezer treatment?
M.M
|
They might indeed, so if you could give me the name, address and telephone number, I'd be most grateful.

Roger,
Millfield Autos, 429, Lincoln Road, Peterborough.
Tel. 01733 557457. Open 7 days.
Bear in mind you are phoning a thriving place located in an old town house with about 10 guys serving behind the counter and an upstairs floor groaning under the weight of stock.
Not quite your usual mail order outlet.
If they have anything you need I'm quite happy to purchase and mail to you for cost plus postage.

Hey, deep joy: the tips are on!
Thank you M.M for the lead to Millfield Autos (what an emporium!). I went up there last Sunday and bought two pairs of 42mm ID tips. While there, they found on their info system that the Capri 2.8i tailpipe OD is 42.5mm. I took the risk, since the tips were so cheap.
First attempt to get them on failed. But this morning I set about the tailpipes to get all the crud off the outside, including adhesive and tape residues from earlier attempts, with a wire-brush drill bit and some good old sandpaper. Then, with some WD40 and determined effort, I twisted the trims onto the pipes. One has gone fully on; the other not quite, but that has allowed me to level them up, as they never were before. They are very firmly fixed and I cannot move them, but I'll check when they get hot -- maybe the pipes will expand more than the trims. I did it all cold, without recourse to the oven.
So, many thanks to all (especially M.M). Tardis tailpipe trims, eh?
Now to keep them cleanish. Any suggestions apart from simple chrome cleaner?
I feel a bit baseball capped about all this, but they really do nicely set off the back end of the old bird, which now has a new rear bumper too. Paul the mechanic is back tomorrow to fix the rear brakes (a cylinder has failed) and all will then be well.
[Footnote: I travelled up to Millfield Autos on the A1(M) during the afternoon. Ten miles south of Peterborough everything came to a halt on the four-lane section, although traffic wasn't particularly dense. It then took 45 minutes to do 2 miles, at the end of which we find no roadworks, no accident, but blokes removing cones. How can such a simple and straightforward process be allowed to cause such chaos and gross inconvenience to the driving public? And Peterborough is a nightmare for visitors in terms of signposting.]

Ahh...the Millfield experience...tempted by any old bedroom furniture bargains at the adj thrift shop?
Actually with Millfield Autos and Machine Mart opp each other a happy hour can be spent dreaming how to spend that small legacy.
Glad you got sorted.

and a bit late off the mark for replying to a post which was last active 7 years ago.
wouldn't be spam would it?

Glad you managed to accomplish the chrome task.
For future "problems", why don't you join a Ford owners club or a specific Capri club where you can share info with other like minded people who will steer you in the right direction whether mechanical or for parts. Especially when you find it hard to get things off the shelf to fit properly. These people will know.
