Insurance Repair vs losing NCB - fsa

Dear Gods of Motoring,

I've ended up in a very stupid predicament. I was rear ended back in February, so filed a claim against TP through my insurance. They allocated a garage etc, but I just did not have a chance to give up the car for the few days they would require to do the repair.

Then I went on holiday, came back straight to working consecutive nights and forgot about it. Now I've got some free days coming up when I can give up the car for a few days, but here's where the pickle comes in:

Although my insurance said they're happy to go ahead with it, they can't guarantee how long it will take them to procure the amount from TPI company. Given that my insurance is up for renewal at the end of December, there's a strong chance I won't have my NCB at renewal time.

The damage to my rear bumper isn't drastic...there's a square mark where the bumper was forced against some metal plate underneath, and it doesn't line up quite right on one side. My excess is £250.

What should I do?

The problem is you don't know how much damage has been done behind the bumper. If the rear panel is bent it might need cutting off and a new one welding in etc.

That is very true, Wackyracer. Despite it being a low speed impact (approx 20mph while I was stationary).

If I get the repair done through my insurance, what options do I have come renewal time and NCB?

Once the claim is settled you will get your money back and ncb restored, just expect your premium to rise anyway.

Back in 2008, I was rear ended on the motorway. Liability was clear cut, I had independent witnesses however the third party who hit my vehicle dragged their feet for a while, blaminf vehicles behind which potentially left me with a £500 excess and loss of NCB.

In the end, the third party accepted liability on a without prejudice basis which was sufficient for my insurer to not touch my NCB, waive my excess and arrange for a hire car to be paid for by the other side. (we were both insured with different RBS group companies which may have had something to do with it).

It may be worth asking your insurer if liability has been accepted by the other side?

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Unfortunately TP has denied liability, so I'm expecting much dragging of feet.

Having run some renewal estimates:
1yr NCB (if I don't go ahead with insurance repair)=£900 with £250 excess.
No NCB (if I do repair and TP are a pain)= £1100 w/£3000 excess or £2700 w/500 excess.

Anyone have any idea how much this might cost to repair if I didn't go through insurance? (I do appreciate this is difficult to tell).

Many thanks for helping out a disorganised idiot!

Its actually impossible to tell.

What you need to do is visit some local bodyshops for a quote. If its only cosmetic go to one of the "smart" repairers that specialise in repairing Motability Cars at the end of the lease. dad used one when the rear was hit, Nissan dealer said £300 +parts, chap did an imaculate job for £55.

Thanks, Skidpan.

I presume they'd have to take the rear bumper off to see if there was any internal damage, before giving a quote?

Somebody ran up the back of you.

Go to 3rd party insurer, they will pay the garage directly - avoiding you using your insurer.

Job Done!

Someone ran into the back of the OP in February. Bit late to go to the 3rd parties insurer don't you think.

I did go to them directly in February....they denied liability, despite how clear cut it seemed.

Just popped round to Gladwins (closest bodywork place to me), who said the damage is cosmetic as the metal rod behind the bumper is intact. They quoted £355. I'm sure I can get it cheaper if I spend more time hunting around.

It is very tempting for me to now not go through my insurer and preserve my NCB at renewal time.

Given the situation, and the quotes I got earlier, do you think that's the best move?

Get more quotes and then decide. Its your money. Only you can spend it.

But you still have to declare it!

Oh yes, most definitely. The only difference in those quotes I got was the NCB...it was still declared.
