Hey everyone, I recently got told I need both lower control arms replacing as it is making my vehicle creak a lot. Currently, I am trying to learn to fix these things myself and am confident enough I can do the job. However.... Read more

I suspect that you are talking about the anti sway bar drop links which generally cause creaking after about 2 years of use on our r****** roads. They are very easy to change.

Looking to do a diy repair clutch and flywheel replacement on a ford transit tt9 (mk7) fwd 2.2l tdci duratorq engine van. Have a few tools (trolley jack, engine hoist, breaker bar etc. No post lift or pits though.
I am a relative beginner in diy auto repairs. I have the Haynes repair / workshop service manual for the van as well as the Haynes as Autofix service. I also have the replacement dual mass flywheel and clutch assembly and pressure plate.

Do I stand a good chance of pulling this off in 3 days as as relative beginner who has only ever changed water pump and serpentine belt or as should I just pay ££££ 1k to have it done profesionally?... Read more

Plenty of people out there do clutch jobs on the floor. It’s certainly a challenge, if you’re up for it, good luck .

Hello,

I had a coolant leak and took it to a mini dealer to check out. was told they were confident that they had found the leak and the gearbox oil cooler needed to be replaced only. agreed to this and within 2 weeks the engine coolant was leaking again. When I opened the bonnet, the coolant was completely gone. took it back to the dealer and now they say the thermostat housing needs to be replaced as it is leaking. they said "We were confident that it was only the gearbox oil cooler and when we pressure tested the system, we did not see any other leaks. If the oil cooler and thermostat housing were leaking at the same time, the pressure would have dropped quite quickly but when we pressure tested the car the initial visit, it did take over 1 hour of constant pressure in the system to identify the gear box oil cooler leaking." At the same time the garage also carried an MOT and the car passed. The explanation I have been given is "It has passed as it has no faults during time of testing as we have filled the coolant in the car prior to the test" Does all of this sound right? Please help I don't have a bottomless bank account. Thank you. Read more

Plastic components subject to the heat of an engine have a lifespan of about ten years.

With a 13 year old car you may find yourself needing an ever bottomless wallet to chase and replace failing components.

i have an audi a4 2004 1.8t that i recently bought, the car has a misfire on cylinder 2 so i replaced the coilpack and the problem went away but only when the car is static, asin not moving and engine running it has no misfire but when you put the car under load after 2000rpm cylinder 2 has a dead misfire, no stuttering or hesitation just goes completly dead, i have ruled out that its not the piston rings as it dosnt smoke i would need to do a compresion test to confirm but im pretty confident it isnt that i know its not a stuck valve as its not constant its only under hard acceleration, i have replaced the coil packs and spark plugs also i checked the coil wires that sit above the exhaust as they are known for splitting due to the heat of the exhaust, cylinder 2 had 2 wires that had the outer case breaking away but not damaged the wire to what i could see so i eletrical taped them to see if the problem persists, which it did. is it the wires that are causing me the misfire, is there damage that i cant see thats caused by the heat and the wires actually need repairing Read more

update, i did some investigating today and the earth wires for the coils that bolts the the rocker cover had started to degrade and break away so i cut them back and added new terminals to the end and rebolted them to the cover, now when checking live data the car no longer counts misfires while its stood running although still misfires on high revs but also checking dtc's showed a code for low fuel level confirmed by the fuel light being on, i did notice this when i bought the car (i know) just never really dawned on me that this could cause such a problem to 1 specific cylinder thinking it would throw misfire codes to all cylinders, could this be my cylinder 2 misfire accompanied by the dead coilpacks i replaced at the start i have yet to do a compression test ill get back with the results from that next week, i did check for vacume leaks even though its one specific cylinder better to be safe than sorry right? and also checked for more split wires but no others apart from the earths to the coils

Bought the car from a main dealer in July 24. Had to have a small warranty repair which was fine but the dash was saying service A in 45 days, five months short of the end of the warranty period. Whilst dong my repair they did a ‘health check’ which is most of an a service anyway as far as I can see. I would obviously like to keep the warranty and am quite ok with paying for an oil and filter job…..£149…but object to paying £382 for the dealer to do again what they have just done. Am I obliged to use the dealer to maintain the warranty or can I use an indie of course using genuine parts, ie, oil filter. Read more

First, talk to the dealer is it a MB approved used warranty or a third party?...

Hi, just wanted to ask about cost of a new passenger door lock. Mine needs replacing and my garage has said they have to get it from a main dealer and have been quoted £365. Is this an average cost? Read more

Hello i need help with escort it has big problems to get up to operating temp while idling it does get there eventually but when driving it takes like 20 km to get the heater blow warmer air. When idling i can feel that the upper radiator hose is getting warm slowly but it is not under pressure only when it gets up to some tempeature it gets some pressure which tells me that the thermostat is working. I have read about the cvh thermostat housing and it has some kind of plastic ball inside that melts when engine overheats which i think is my problem because last year my engine overheated because of faulty fan when it overheated i replaced the coolant tempeature sensor and the thermostat thinking it would help but it didnt since then i have no heat :( . Now that i know the ball inside is melted i know that coolant is bypassing the thermostat going straight into the radiator. I wanted to get new housing but that is impossible in my country nobody has it anymore so im here to ask if there is any possibility how to repair the housing or maybe partially plug the hole so that it can still flow trough but not so much. Thanks for any suggestions on repair. Read more

My 207 (16 years old) refused gears recently after a normal 10-mile journey. Common cause is failing clutch master or slave cylinder. My local indy replaced both to be sure, so I don't know which it was. Parts about £60, 3 hours labpur - it's a diesel, so access is not very convenient.

Car was (sort of) driveable if the clutch pedal was pulled back up and pumped to restore pressure, only temporarily but enough to get us home.
