I also like stopping at motorway services ( although not the outrageous prices) I love to see all the different kinds of people passing through on their journeys, knowing your not at work so don’t have to rush makes it even better,

Good planning (as well as knowing the route anyway) of journeys (including normal and backup stops/routes) certainly makes them less arduous/more enjoyable....

Unclear how many owners may be affected but VW Group cars appear to have a SOS Emergency system issue. www.theguardian.com/money/2021/may/01/vw-audi-and-...m

Any forum members affected? No mention of Seat?

But what a disappointment, another major fault on top of Dieselgate, DSG gearbox faults, timing chain faults, and ABS module faults to name a few.

Certainly not changed my mind about never buying a VW group car.

I understand with VAG cars its the ones based on the latest platforms with the very latest infotainment set up, the one which controls the heating etc. Some models are still being made with the earlier separate heater controls and I understand they are not affected.

So only buy a VAG car with old fashioned heater controls until its sorted.

I want to register my Talisman in the UK, but as Renault did not sell this car in the country, there is no compatible right hand drive model in the database of insurers.

It isn't going to be difficult to insure your car in the UK due to it being left hand drive. There are heaps and heaps of US and EU cars, both modern and classic, being driven in the UK.

As to cost?, not sure as I've never looked into it. You probably won't get a favourable quote from a run-of-the-mill insurer, but if you were to look around at various insurers advertised in classic/American/kit car magazines, you may get something a bit more reasonable.

Reading a magazine I came upon an advert for Nene Overland, a well known Land Rover specialist. The advert had a picture of an engine and above it, said: "Choice of 5 installs - 355bhp manual - 700bhp automatic".

Curious, I went on the website where the listed engine conversions ran to a supercharged 6.2 (GM) V8 with 600 (not 700) bhp.... Read more

My Volvo 850 SE estate has suffered over lockdown and the winter. It's needing new calipers, discs, pads etc.. around £1000. So I've decided to replace it. Which similar car, at under £2000, has the same or greater boot capacity. It must be ULEZ compliant, preferably petrol automatic and capable of carrying about 700Kg?

Is anyone interested in my 850? Good tyres, 6 months MOT, drivable.... Read more

Thanks for that. I maybe overestimated the weight. It's probably nearer 500kg. I've not been able to find a small vehicle to suit that's also ULEZ compliant.?

Petrol engined vehicles that are EU4 and diesel cars and vans EU6. Just check on the London ULEZ compliance website for each vehicle. It does mean that you could buy a much older, and thus cheaper petrol-engined car (from the early-mid 2000s) that complies (for the moment - those rules will almost certain change in the future) than a diesel (from the mid-2010s)....

Looking to sell my '07 3 Series Coupe soon. The car is worth around £5k at a guess. Mileage around 60k.

Currently there are noticeable scuffs on both the front and rear bumpers. Also, the alloys have all been "kerbed" and would benefit from a refurb.... Read more

This is a 14 year old car so some wear and tear is to be expected. It is low mileage for the year and if it has a good service history and has been owned by you for a sensible period of time this would point to it being a well founded vehicle. £300-400 wont buy you too much in terms of refurbishment unless you have access to a trusted local who can help you out. For example you can reckon on a bumper respray at around no less than £200, if the brackets holding it on have been damaged then of course more. Alloy refurbishment can get pretty expensive depending on the nature of the damage, in fact in some cases it is cheaper to buy a pattern set of rims and fit those. However unless it is done properly the refurbishments can look too evident against the well worn patina of the rest of the vehicle.

Assuming the above I would be tempted to try my luck and advertise it at the price you might reasonably expect before committing the big money. Give it a really good clean up, or even get it valeted, and put a years MOT on it. It is surprising how well a car can come up with elbow grease and suitable cleaning materials. Make sure you clean the shuts, inside the door closures, and polish the glass inside and out, tidy it up under the bonnet, get rid of any nasty niffs - dogs, smoke, get the paperwork together etc etc. It is up to you of course as to whether you accept any offers you might receive but assuming the above and at the right price this would be an attractive for perhaps somebody looking to trade up from their first car at not too much cost.
