I’ve just been told today that I’m not going to be returning to work until the end of May at the earliest. Boredom is starting to get to me, I wish I had wee modern retro classic to tinker with to keep me off the wine.

Assuming a budget of £10k maximum what would you buy to keep you in oil soaked nirvana and away from the wife during lockdown?

Found a few interesting things on sale but all things equal I’d love an 90’s hot hatch like a late 205 GTi 1.9, XR2i, Golf MK II GTi 8v, R19 16v or possibly a more mundane but rarer and often historically more important mainstream car that no one is preserving like a Rover R8 or a Ford Mondeo Mk I. Did see a few interesting things for sale if anyone cares to buy me one.

I think I can guess which is more likely to be a money pit in the near future.

Me too John, though what we think we know probably differs!....

My insurer (Saga) has actually PUT UP my insurance - by nealry 40%. And no, I have not had any accidents or claims, in fact I used the car very little the past year even before isolation! It was a huge shock when I had my renewal :( Read more

Mike Mckay, if you're still checking this page then definitely follow Frederick's advice of contacting your MP asap with similar content to what you posted above.
I had serious issues 8 yrs ago with the DVLA in relation to them losing HGV & PCV entitlements from my licence, costing me work. I'd spent months being passed from pillar to post, with all manner of excuses and delays. With prompt intervention from my MP's constituency office, the missing categories were magically found again.
Also ask your MP if they could contact your insurer to explain things and seek some leeway due to the unusual situation.
The intervention of an MP seems to quickly reach someone with a bit more clout and can resolve problems much faster.
All the best & I hope things work out for you, both in relation to this situation and your longer term health.

Some stores have reopened, our local is one which is pretty hand considering that its the time of year for DIY, more people than normal have plenty of time on their hands and the weather is great.

Just like going to the supemarket, tried yesterday pm but the queue was long so went at the strike of 8am today and the queue was even longer. Took about an hour to get into the shop but once in we got all we wanted and paid within about 20 minutes. The only items not available are the cafe, key cutting and the toilets, on a chilly morning I was wishing I had not had the 2nd coffee.... Read more

Some B&Qs are open. Ours is still order online click and collect. B&Q website places you in a queue and the two times I've looked the wait has been nearly and hour!. The local Screwfix which is next door to our B&Q is open (click and collect) and there's no online waiting for that site.

Hello.

I have a Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 petrol 2010 plate.

In April i noticed a clunk whenever i steered moderately/ hard to the right, ie slow speed turning and parking. To my untrained ear it sounded like the driver-side suspension.
I took the car to a garage and they replaced the coil spring and checked the CV joint and suspension. All seemed fine.

About 2 weeks ago a new sound developed. The driver side suspension was really rattling over any kind of bump.
My local (trusted) mechanic checked it and replaced the shock absorber and top mount, as well as the anti roll bar link arm.

A few days later the first sound returned, when i turn right as before. I'm loath to pay out more so I'm hoping the folks here can help identify the problem.

The power steering sounds fine, the reservoir is full and i can't see any leaks anywhere.
The car feels normal, it's not listing to the right and there are no noises at speed.
I can't see any lose trim/bodywork or anything else that might be fouling/ catching when i turn.

The one thing i have noticed is that the Coil spring and shock mount on the problematic side have been mounted facing the opposite way to the passenger side, if that's important.... Read more

The global oil market has crashed in recent days, but you're unlikely to see that translate into cheaper fuel in the UK at the pumps. Here's why.

Is it just me or has the article completely and utterly failed to explain the WHY??
There's an implication as to the why for small independent forecourts buts that's hardly the full story is it.

What a completely (& quite literally) pointless article. Read more

The answer to 'why' is because they can charge what they want - it's free market capitalism. That's 'why'.

How insightful. Thanks.

With any VAG model suffering electrical issues in the doors , the first thing I would check is the wiring where it runs from the door A posts , through the rubber conduit, into the door electrics . Check these areas in both . Not uncommon to find broken / corroded wiring .
