Just did a hpi check on a car i was thinking of buying. The car is advertised for 61000 and the mileage check flagged up a discrepancy. The last record goes down a small amount rather than up. Does this look strange or could there be an explanation?

A turbo is a centrifugal air pump, which when driven by the outgoing engine exhaust gasses increases the flow rate of air into the engine air intake. The faster the turbo spins the more air is blown into the air intake. This greatly increases engine power, and without it your engine wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding.

But that's not the end of the story. Too much turbo boost can seriously damage the engine, even to the point of total destruction, and so the turbo boost must be correctly controlled.

Turbo boost pressure is measured by a Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor. This tells the ECM what the turbo boost pressure is so the ECM can fuel the engine correctly for all engine load conditions.

Turbo boost pressure is controlled in one of two ways. Either a wastegate valve in the turbo opens to dump any excess pressure directly into the exhaust once the maximum pressure has been reached, or the turbo vanes are variable, which means the ECM controls the turbo boost throughout.

If your engine is overboosting then the means by which the boost is controlled is not working correctly. This will have to be investigated, but likely causes are a faulty turbo actuator, split vacuum pipes, or stuck wastegate valve or vane ring.

The ECM will have a safety protection against overboosting by reducing engine power to prevent damage should this occur. Limp home mode is itself not a fault, but rather a protection against something that is.

I've seen a Peugeot 50008 2L diesel MPV for £6K with 124K on the clock. Bodywork and interiors fine. It's the e act spec I want and they're v hard to find so I'm tempted by this one. It's been a co pant car and serviced at fairly long intervals of 19, 37, 58, 84 and 108K miles. I'm a novice buyer and have no knowledgeable car buff to take with me! Hoping to look at it tomorrow. What do you think? And if you say it's worth a look an you explain in lay and terms what I should check exactly please? Happy to lay on the floor to see under the car and get hands dirty in the engine etc. ADVICE NEEDED QUICKLY!!! All replies today appreciated thanks. I don't want to make an expensive mistake if I can help it!! Read more

The German Transport Ministry KBA if challenging other car manufacturers of similar
deeds and law breaking as per Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda ; should either provide the information proving Fiat Chrysler Diesels break European emission laws or American Federal ones for that matter, or Shut up!. Forgive the cliche but two wrongs do not make a right . If ; as a supposed National Independent body they are infact
attempting to Bias public opinion to help THEIR LARGEST AUTO COMPANY ,
they should provide facts and figures first before rumours. If Gianni Agnelli was still alive I dont doubt he would at his family's and Fiat's expense fight these below the belt claims through the European Courts. Modern Fiat Chrysler are too involved in looking at their share price first. Shame!
Rightly everyone will consider Fiat Chrysler is at fault also. Maybe they are, but KBA are the ones to point the finger without providing relevant evidence .Of course too many European Journalists show bias to German Auto manufactures anyway; their publisher's need the huge advertising Budgets, to survive in a very competitive Market . A point we should all keep in mind when attempting to draw conclusions without any
sensible technical information. Stanton UK Read more
