I just experienced yesterday a strange whining noise from engine when we arrived home. It was continuos with some stops for some seconds, we also noticed that it disappeared when pushing clutch. If its anything like mine and a few others on the Peugeotforums, all it needs is a little TLC and maintenance.
First you need to overfil the PS reservoir beyond the MAX level. Its a known released Peugeot service bulletin (well, only to Autodata users and the like)....
