Is it possible to change the Trip Computer Reading from eg Miles per gallon to ltr/100Km or Km/Ltr. Presumably the LHD models in Europe are metric so is it a function within the computer perhaps only selectable by the manufacturer or is it possible for it to be retrospectively converted by a dealer or experienced engineer with the right kit? You would need to recode the instrument cluster using Vag-com software and change the third digit to "3". Easy to do if you can fine someone with the software, or you can get Chinese clones of an old version off ebay which may suffice.

I have seat Toledo with a shot DSG gearbox. I have been told the box can not be repaired (can't get parts) so needs to replaced. The all in quote to replace the box with a new one is £3500. The car is 4 years old and has done 82k, so a sensible valuation with a working gearbox is £5500.

So my dilemma is what to do, get it repaired or try to sell it?

If I try to sell it, what am I likely to get for it how long will it take?

I'm just looking for options, the simple (and expensive) is to tell them to replace it, what else can I do?

Thanks

I was told if you fit a recon box, it will need a new ESU, that will put the price back up to a similar amount. is this true?

After 2 years ownership, and 100% reliability, I have just been floored by the unreliability of my '98 626. Two weeks ago a headlight bulb failed, and last week the alternator belt snapped! Blimey. Fortunately I was close to home when the battery warning light came on. A new belt, which also drives the water pump, cost me £6.26 from my local factor, and my indie charged me £15 to put the 626 up on his hydraulic ramps to check there were no bits remaining in the engine bay after fitting the replacement belt. He also checked pipes, pads, discs etc so I cannot complain too much. Obviously these cars are not as reliable as I had thought.

I'm not sure what I've done! Yesterday I changed the reverse light switch on my Focus, everything seemed to go well, and now the reverse light works.

This morning I drove it and it has develeoped the following problem:
When I engage 1st gear, it pulls away fine untill I lift my foot completely off the clutch, at which point there's an extremely load clunk. After the clunk, the car drives perfectly, and changes through the other gears fine.

When I then stop, and engage reverese, there's again a loud clunk when I lift my foot off the clutch.

This only happens with reverse ad 1st gear.

I am sure I put everything back where I found it!

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

16v model
Recently aquired this car and it 'hunts' quite badly whilst warming up but seems to tickover ok when warm.My initial thought was that the CO needed adjusting but I've been told that it's all controlled by the ECU and it was suggested that the EGR valve might need cleaning.
The battery (I think) needs replacing could that be a factor?
Can anyone tell me where the EGR valve is and how do I clean it?
If I got it nice and hot before taking it in for an mot would it give a passable reading?
Car drives fine apart from the variable tickover.
Look forward to your replies
Thanks.

Do petrol cars have EGRs? If it does the same thing if you try to hold it at 2k rpm with the throttle head for the lambda probe.

It was long and fast, although I guess that`s a relative term when there`s a Punto van towering over you - the gleam of greased pipes and frames almost overhead.

But not quite - NOT QUITE!! ------- made it - although perceived in the languar of retirement relaxation, amongst the lemmings of the morning rush hour, as perhaps a ferret - the poor mans whippet of these Northen climes.

A rat run then perhaps? around the brick terraces of autumal dreams and desires of far away places - or at least Magaluff and a few lagers.

But no. It ran tail stretched out behind - fast and sleek, across the inner city dual carriageway - up a short brick wall vertically and into the rich pickings of car window excreted burger remains (with French fries)

A true rat run then, one fast food place to the other - across a busy road.

I could see in the gleam of it`s left eye... appreciation for the salt repelling grease on the pipes and frames.

I was delivering some computer bits to a factory (motoring link) whose purpose was to sanitise and turn around those green plastic crates the fruit and veg live in at supermarkets. The incoming crates were, therefore, a bit "fresh"... Whilst waiting for the transport clerk to book me in, something the shape of a rat, the colour of a rat and the size of a VERY BIG rat scuttled past my feet and disappeared between some stacks of crates. The conversation I had with the warehouseman (while he was concentrating on some paperwork) follows:

Me: Did you see that blooming rat?
WHM (without looking up): It wasn't a rat, it was a mouse.
Me: It was a very big mouse, what on earth do you feed them on?
WHM: Lorry drivers...

Had a different ECU fitted at weekend to my focus

Car ran ok for a hour or two

Then just died, turns over but no spark at plugs

Could the garage have killed the replacement ECU, i think he left my old coil pack on cos he said it was ok.

He is baffled after his reader came back with no faults and has now passed it on to a local company with a better scanner to try and trace the fault because i have no error codes on the ECU.

Any suggestions, so i have an idea before they try and tell me any different tales.

Update:

Had my original ECU repaired and they installed a GENUINE Ford Coil Pack and the car is now back on the road.

I now have correct idle speed, My speedometer has not gone faulty...yet.

Only problem now is car seems hesitant at low revs or puling away. plus once really warmed upit occasionally seems to hunt on idle before pulling away, but only when at biting point on clutch.

any ideas before i get another hook up to computer tester.

Have just had MOT done on our Almera Tino and the garage flagged that the angle of the headlights was wrong, they looked like they were continental. The car got through with a pass by the guy sticking some black tape all over the headlights so that the lights were within the boundaries of the test.

Has anyone heard mention of this before? It is a UK right hand drive car and the lights do seem to point in the right direction as best I can tell even if not right for the test.

This is the first MOT we have had to have done since buying the car just under a year ago.

I have heard of this before.

A freind of mine bought a new Fiesta some years back and noticed the unusual pattern and oncoming traffic flashing their headlights.

The dealer had to order new headlamps and fit them. That was a new car, though.

if you do the same thing at every fill up... e.g. I do 4 clicks of the pump when it reaches full ish.. then presumably you'd get the near enough result you'd need to do a meaningful comparison

in other words it doesn't have to be totally full every time, as long as you fill it to the same point every time

similar engine in my wife's car and the worst it has ever done is 33mpg around town

Hi all,
I poseted here a few months ago regarding my ST that was stolen and being unhappy re the valuation. The original post was hidden by one of the mods as it gave a lot of specific information - I was given the option of leaving it open but took the advice of the mod (think it was pugmod).

Basicly I bought a car below market value (11k when it was worth 12.5k) and the insurance company refused to pay 12.5k for it initaly.

After a total of 21 phone calls they have payed out the full amount I was looking for.

They agreed in the end that the T&Cs were subjective, it said something like "Market value is the price of the car on the current market. Where below market value is paid for the vehicle the price will be adjusted accordingly."

I still plan on lodging a formal complain to the ins company and if they dont change the T&Cs I will refer it to the financial ombudsman.

I also plan on filing a complaint on the basis of undue stress and inconvienence.

All the best, Craig. Read more
