Just been reading NW's thread and it made me wonder - as and when garages (main dealers or indies) realise that a customer is savvy and not easily duped or scammed, do they mark that job sheet somehow to prevent the telephone call for unnecessary work?

Conversely, do they mark the cards of the mugs that have been conned previously?

Or am I just being a bit cynical? Read more

I find that, by using garages who are very busy, they have little or no time to make up extra work or try to rip me off. It's also a sign that they're trusted by many.

I was caught out in my younger days by less busy institutions, so tend to keep to the busy ones now and book well in advance.

Hi ,

I have a 2005 55 Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI. Will this model have a dpf fitted as standard. If so what is the procedure for renewing the dpf and where on the car is it?

Thanks. Read more

In reply to rtj 70, not sure if it has one or not ad have read the dpf has to be renewed at a certain interval (i.e. 70k).

I collected my new Mazda6 on Wednesday from a main dealer in Berkshire, a member of the Co-op.

Although it was a new for old on a total loss, I had to pay for it myself as the dealer had "forgotton" to invoice my insurance company. The insurance company, Saga, had placed the order on 20 August and at that time stressed to the dealer the need to get the invoice back to them on time. They did in fact receive it yesterday.

The insurance company need 10 -14 days to issue a cheque and then the dealer has to clear it before I get my money back. It looks as though I have loaned someonr £16,000 +

I am not criticizing Saga in any way, their have behaved faultlessly, but I find it incredible that a main dealer should treat its customers thusly.

I have of course written to the C.E.O. of the Co-op, copied to Mazda, but, what would have happened if I had been unable to raise the money, I am due to drive to Spain in just over a week..

23m quid spent on a new road, major inconvenience to road users for months on end. Now they got the tarmac mix wrong. No worries the local taxpayers will pick up the bill whilst these clowns go elsewhere to practice their reverse alchemy turning gold into mud. Read more

new Cambridge guided bus
tickets costs haven't been announced yet

But they have announced that the tickets won't be interchangeable between the two companies operating the service.

But this is the good bit, you can't buy a ticket on the bus. You have to buy it from a machine at the stop in advance of the bus arriving. So if you buy a ticket for A, but if B turns up first (second, third, etc) you have to wait for an A bus to use your ticket.

A masterclass in how to make public transport usable.

While doing an oil change I lost the nylon sump plug washer. Put the plug back without the washer, no leaks at the moment. How important is this? Read more

I was involved in a bizarre accident a couple of weeks ago in which the vehicle ahead of me was halted by traffic congestion and inexplicably reversed at great speed into my car which was stationary. The errant driver is, I understand, 'trying it on' with her insurance company by saying that I drove into her. Fortunately an independent witness was on hand and has supported my version of events. Should further evidence be required by either insurance company would the fact that the airbags in my car failed to deploy, presumably because I was stationary, further support my case?

As an ancilliary question, at what speed in a head-on impact do air bags operate? Thanks in advance for any opinions. Read more

I'm (hopefully) picking up my new car on Saturday - is there a list of things I should check/watch out for when I collect it? It is from a main dealer and is new, so hopefully won't be much wrong with it... Read more

Lured punters to quiet streets to "view cars" being sold for cash - violent robberies left traumatised victims in hospital.

It is not an isolated incident as other gangs still at large - just yesterday another attack on a man in E London left him in hospital - the £5000 was stolen - he went to see a VW Golf! Read more

The copper describes these robberies as 'well planned and elaborate'.

There is nothing in the story to say the cars were advertised at cheap prices, so the victims cannot fairly be branded greedy.

In this thread we have one trader taking £40k in cash for a car, and another trader criticising buyers for being prepared to pay £5k in cash.

Another thread reveals weakesses in the Paypal system.

Then there's bank drafts which can apparently be undone.

If I were selling a £5k car, I'd seriously think about asking for cash, which means I wouldn't be surprised or suspicious to be asked for cash if I was buying.

Scams fool the otherwise intelligent, not the already foolish.
