Borrowed a 5000 mile Passat 110 Tdi CR Highline form local VW dealers to undertake a long (400 miles) journey over the weekend. We are considering a new estate with the same engine under scrappage. Just returned this morning and I am amazed to note minimal movement on the fuel guage and a recorded average of 58.6 mpg for the journey on the computer. This was a mix of motorway and slower second class roads but driving normally, overtaking where I could and generally making good progress. To me this represents astounding economy from a large car and must sy something for the newer common rail engine. Granted the car is no ball of fire but its smooth and quiet and once wound up can travel very quickly indeed. So looks like a new R Line estate then.

Almost undoubtedly.
My brothers 2.7 diesel S type auto. will not start after leaving the battery flat for a long time, everything seems to work but when the key is turned nothing happens (as if you are in Drive and not P or N) any ideas anyone please? Read more
Bit random, but is there much fuel in it?
I read a roadtest where the car drove normally but was parked with low fuel only for it not to restart. Jaguar pointed out that its designed to do this to protect the catalyst.
... turn it off?
Ref: BMW/VAG.
Really dont like the idea.
And what happens if you are sitting in a queue and it is -5deg or 30deg and you dont want to freeze / swelter, does the system recognise that it needs the engine and start it to produce heat / aircon?
Any knowledge / experiences?
Thanks. Read more
"Was very irritating having to wait while the thing fired up before they could move in the queue."
Must have been the driver being slow. Dip the clutch and it starts straight away, with no delay.
For some reason, start/stop isn't working on SWMBO's new Mini convertible: she doesn't like start/stop so we won't do anything about it. It may be that she's got the air conditioning on with the roof down - which would probably disable start/stop anyway.
Hi,
I currently have the anti pollution issue going on with my 2002 406 LX. ( the first time the antipollution thing came on, the engine cut out and went into limp mode. However this has not occured again).
I'm yet to go to a garage to check out the anti pollution thing, but two days ago a new issue came up:
Every now and then, the car shows: coolant temperature too high, and the stop sign flashes. Meanwhile, the temperature guage still stays under 90 degrees. After few minutes of driving, it stops. This has been happening randomly over the last two days.
Can anyone figure this one out?

Dust filter?
Is that the engine's air filter, or pollen filter?
If the latter, then try

Hi there,
I have a 99 passat and it wont start, everything has been checked and turns out fine, it has something to do with the manufactured alarm on the car. As if my key wont let me start the car. The alarm sounds only half the time, but blinks red when locked. Does anyone know anything about the ignition and keys for this?? please and thank you!!
{moves from a 2003 post you tagged onto, to one of its own. Engine info may be useful?}

CCM and water problem very common I am afraid. Enter Plenum Chamber into the search window on www.vwaudiforum.co.uk Passat section. If the drain holes, two, where clear why was it retaining water. That can not be. To remove the plooen filter the trim sas to be removed from the bottom of the windscreen not just the scuttle plate. Take care doing that as you can crack the screen. Regards Peter
Gave the Triumph Sprint an airing this afternoon in the lovely weather and came up behind a large motorhome towing a very small Suzuki car.
The car was bearing the rear registration number of the motorhome and its rear lights also seemed to be linked up to those of the towing vehicle.
Anyway as I overtook I saw that the car was on its 4 wheels and had some sort of drawbar arrangement. Not spending too much time examining it you understand!
Now I have a very brief understanding of traffic law ;-) but as I progressed in the sunshine I got thinking.
Was the car classed as a trailer or a 'motor vehicle'? If it was a trailer then it was bearing the correct reg plate. If it was a 'motor vehicle then it should have been displaying its own as it was 'on a road' . But then the car obscured the rear of the motorhome so should it have had 2 reg plates on it????
And the there is the question of the other documentation. If it was a trailer then it would not require its own insurance but if it was a 'motor vehicle' it would require Insurance, VEL and MOT.
A 'motor vehicle' ceases to be on a road only when its wheels are off the ground ie on a trailer which it wasn't therefore it was still a 'motor vehicle' on a 'road'.
So then I thought, 'Must get a life', rolled back the throttle and enjoyed the rest of the ride.
Its only when this sort of outfit gets involved in something that the head scratching and law book perusal starts.
Anyway I thought I would throw it in for discussion or perhaps someone has some first hand knowledge.

Can claim dual FC
As a trailer coz it is being towed. As such will need the VRM of the towing vehicle unless Military that have seperate numbers on their trailers.
As a motor vehicle because owner intends to keep on road and as such has not fallen out of the definition of m veh and as such even if towed with the wheels on the road Insurance and MOT and Excise apply.

Reading today's Telegraph there are tales of woe from VAG & BMW owners about problems just out of warranty, and there's even a thread in Technical about a Honda which needed expensive repairs. Issues with various Vauxhall models are legion, and I even recently saw a comment about a Lexus which had destroyed its clutch and Lexus were being unhelpful.
For our family, I like to buy cars new (or very nearly new) and keep them for 5-6 years, covering perhaps 50-60K miles. I'll pay for dealer servicing, tyres etc, but I don't expect to have anything go wrong.

Is there a brand which is considered "bomb-proof"?
No.

Thought that was odd, but it's specified in directive 93/116/EC:
www.supertech.lv/01993L0116-19940102-en.pdf
"4.3. Fuel consumptions are calculated according to point 7 by the carbon
balance method using the measured emissions of CO2 and the other
carbon related emissions (CO and HC). The results will be rounded
to the first decimal place."
Formulae specifying how the mpg is calculated in 7.2.
