My 2.0 TDI Golf Mk V is coming up to 4.5 years old, and 73k.

Recently, the engine fan has started kicking in on a regular basis, far more regularly than it used to, and at times when you wouldnt expect, such as when the engine is cold after being sat for a couple of days (amoungst others). I know it is summer and therefore the fan will kick in when sat in traffic etc, but this is far more regular than that.

I have checked the coolant level, which is all fine. The car was only serviced last month and has a full VW history.

Any ideas what this might be? Something to do with the control module, or something more sinister?

I appreciate nobody can really diagnose over the internet, but wondered if this was a common fault........ or the starts of soemthing more serious (HG failure?)..........

Thanks in advance. Read more

I've recently done "Big Als" fan fix to my MK4 golf v5 estate and alls good again, it bypasses the damaged internal resistors using a pair of RS Components sourced external resistors mounted on a heat sink connected to the fast side of the fans to give slow and fast speed twin fans again.

I have a 1999 V-Reg Toyota Corolla 1.3 which I have owned for 3 years and has now done 92k. It has been perfectly reliable and I'm very happy with it, but in the last couple of months, it has lost power in the higher gears. It doesn't seem to be continuously deteriorating, rather a noticable change.

Previously for example, I would approach a big roundaboat slowing to 30mph in 4th gear. Then I would accelerate gently if there is a gap. Now, when I try to accelarate in the same situation, the car seems to loose power and lurch foward several times. I can either change down into third, or after a few seconds of lurching, the car gets a grip and gains speed. This has upset a few drivers when I've pulled out safely and then dawdled in front of them. I get the same problem trying to pull away from 20mph in 3rd gear which previously was fine.

So it seems the car is now less forgiving and has a smaller range of speeds in which it is comfortable in each gear. I have changed my driving style and drop down gears much more frequently when I need acceleration but I am wondering if this problem needs fixing (urgently or at some point) and what are the likely possible explanations (and how much each of these would cost to investigate and fix). I would really appreciate your advice. Read more

Corolla update: In the end we decided to book an early service, and also replaced the HT leads. The garage checked out the coil packs, which seemed ok still, and the car is now running beautifully again, so I think we can put the power problem down to the HT leads. The clutch certainly is quite worn, but I'm hoping it will keep going for a bit longer.

Thank you everybody very much for your advice!

What is the fan belt routing?
Amazingly Haynes dont cover this (How do they keep going?)

There are six pulleys clockwise from top front:
Generator
PS
Crankshaft
Water pump
Tensioner
Idler

I can see the logical route, with exceptions:
Does water pump use the smooth side of the belt
Idler at top, does the belt go over or under?

Thanks in advance

Hi

Went to refill the windscreen wash fluid on my girlfriends C4, only when i went to pull the bonnet release cable (in the direction as stated in the manual) it felt loose.
As i pulled it (in the correct direction) there was just this click noise and the bonnet didnt pop up.

Im unsure if i have broken it, or it was like that (all I did was pull it as stated in the book, and like i have done before)

The car is still under warrenty, but are we going to have any problems with the dealer. the handle is made out of the cheapest bit of flimsiest plastic i have ever seen, and its a akward way of pulling it (according to the manual you have to pull it to the right, instead of a lever that you pull towards you, like on my car)

Thanks in Advance Read more

Just wondering whether dealers offer potential customers unaccompanied test drives nowadays?

I'm a private buyer, looking to buy new/nearly new, have a short list of three or four makes/models. I don't intend to rob a bank or trash a car but would really rather try the car out for half an hour or so without having to make small talk with the sales exec.

The last new car I bought a few years ago, i was able to borrow a demo for a couple of hours by myself because the garage staff knew me personally and just handed me the key, but unfortunately, they don't have one of the franchises I'm toying with this time.

I realise that if solo drives are available I'd probably have to fill a form out etc, but don't mind that! Read more

Mitsubishi dealer in North Devon couldn't have been more obliging. All day unaccompanied if you want it. That was in a Colt. I wonder if they would have been as generous with an Evo?

Went up to the Lake District yesterday to leave my son with my parent's for a week, and they were filling me in on their new (ie. mk2) Ka. On the whole they like it, but there are a couple of niggles:

1. Difficulty with the petrol filler cap. They find it quite difficult to get it on and/or off (sorry can't remember exactly what they said), and when they mentioned it to the chap at the local Ford dealer, he had a go and failed. Dad points out that not being able to get petrol into it does wonders for the running costs though :-)

2. No external lock on the passenger door. My parents opted not to have central locking (no I don't know why either), but there's no key hole in the passenger door, so mum has to wait for dad to open his door and open her door from the inside (I guess on the previous Micra they had 2 keys). Bit of a nuisance if it's raining, which is not that unusual in the Lakes. I told them that it's because the car designers would have assumed every car would be sold with central locking and it's their fault for being Luddites, but mum said that the Ford chap had told her that quite a few customers have mentioned this. And is there a safety issue?

Just wondering if anyone else has come across these.

Cheers

Not as simple as it may sound! Had a serious head gasket failure. Replaced the gasket and checked and rechecked the timing! Changed oil and filter Engine started first turn of the key. Found considerable hesitancy when throttle floored. Did 50 miles like this and then started to think what trouble could be.
Seemed like bad plugs or leads and replaced these, slight improvement. Left the car for a few days and tried again, now MUCH better! In fact almost right! Thought that I just might have a slight inlet manifold leak and retorqued the nuts. The awkward lower ones were a little loose.
Tried starting and no joy. Checked fuel and there was no pressure at the Schraeder valve. Tried again. Pump worked for a second. Enough for the engine to catch but only splutter and then it cut. From then on no fuel pump at all.
Checked the fuel pump relay off car. That worked. Checked fuel pump with a supply from a power supply unit. Pump worked fine in tank! Plenty of fuel too. The engine has been replaced at some time, it is a slightly later model than expected. It is the 8 valve SOHC with an ignition block on the end of the cam. The supply to the fuel pump relay coil is from the ignition switched 12 volt line and is sunk by terminal B6 of the ECU. The 12 v on the switched terminals of the relay is from the permanent 12 V supply. (and yes I do have a good earth on the pump connection!)
Is the fault likely to be on the ECU (terminal B6 not sinking the coil current?) or should I be looking at some other area that I may have missed with my usual tunnel vision? Any suggestions much appreciated as I am running out of ideas!

Thanks in advance

Yes checked all the earth wires, there are a lot of them! Will recheck the plugs in case I have got any swopped over.

I've had this problem on my Ford Ka Style for a couple of years now, but enough's enough and I'd like to get it sorted before the bad weather sets in.

The problem is in the shape of the rear window and flexibility (or lack) of the rear wiper blade; when the wiper's switched on it's too inflexible to stay in contact with the whole of the (very domed) rear window and so ends ups only wiping an arc about 6 inches high at the top of the window.

This has happened with cheapo halfords blades, pricier branded blades, and the one fitted by the garage a couple of services ago - all marked as suitable for the Ka.

Does anyone have any tips? Is there anything I can adjust on the average wiper blade, or do I need to hunt down some kind of special, extra-flexible one? It'd be really nice to be able to see out my back window this winter! Read more

Thanks everyone! I had a good giggle at NASA and the PM getting involved...surely the masons should have a say too?!

So my list of things to try is:
- Official Ford wiper blade (or possibly tecalamet), new arm if that doesn't work.
- Oiling the exisiting wiper arm.
- Buy a cheap blade and massacre it til it works :D I might actually try this with the existing blade - it's had 6 months life so I won't be too irritated if I accidentally trash it.

Thanks all! :)
