Hi guys,

Any idea what the value of a Ford Focus 1.6 Silver special edition is on an 02 plate, with 50k miles. It is due a service and MOT at the end of the month, but has tax til July. It has a full service history and all the extras like heated leather seats, ABS, A/c, etc etc

I only ask cause I've been offered £2,300, which I think is a bit low, given I've seen them on autotrader at £3,495. I had hoped to get £2,800 which I think is fair...but what do you guys think? Is this the affect of the credit crunch?

Thanks in advance... Read more

I looked at this thread earlier and I'm certainly no expert but I've had a financial hand in a few car purchases and sales with a friend. I didn't want to be mocked but my instinct was about £2k, so I'd take the £2.3k. I think when we own things we grow fond of them and tend to perhaps overvalue them. It's worth what someone will pay for it, of course, you just have to be prepared to wait for that person.

The mayor said he "totally forgot" to pay the £8-a-day charge in the required 48 hours after he drove into central London last month.

All of this is very interesting. If I had time, I would make a couple of requests under Freedom of Information legislation:
Question 1: How many drivers who paid the CC last year were NOT actually captured by CCTV images? (My point being that, aside from the fact that many cars get in "under the radar" a lot of people must have ended up paying by mistake, e.g. as they did not actually enter the zone, or not in the operating time.)
Question 2: How many erroneous fines were found to have been levied on "innocent" motorists (those who had suffered a faulty recognition, or a cloned number)?
Adding together these two figures should produce a rough figure of percentage of inaccuracy.
Even a "mere" 1% inaccuracy adds up to over 1.37 million GBP, stolen from the hard-pressed British motorist. Food for thought.

I have a alloy wheel which is 17" diam and 7.5" from inner to outer rim edges -- would this be classed as a 17x 7.5j ??? - also where can I find a tyre size calculator for this wheel - alloy wheel center's just quote a tyre to rim diam size you input. - my web searching ability is not great and I get frustrated that something that seems simple never comes up with an answer.

Thanks for that --- another question for wheel and tyre men - our car has 195-45 x16 tyres on with rim protectors - looking at tyres it seem they are not wide enough for the rims - from the edge of rim protector the tyre walls are leaning in towards the tread - as though they are a size to small -- according to the link 195 tyres will fit a rim width of 6.5" to 8" (these are 7.5" ) inputting 205 tyres the rim widths are from 7" to 8.5" - The old Yaris had 195 same make tyres and the sidewalls were almost vertical from rim protector - I didn't measure the rims on Yaris but will do when I can get to new owner. -- I have also seen same thing on a mates A4 - he bought a set of alloys with new tyres and they looked like they were a size to small - - - would next size tyres up improve road holding and handling or am I just been too picky

Has anyone else noticed this on their cars.

Thanks.

losing coolant - seems to be a leak on the front of the engine at the left hand side as you look at it - could it be water pump ? any ideas on what it would involve( big job/small job etc.)? Read more

I'm pretty sure that the clutch auto adjustment mechanism isn't working properly on my Megane. I've looked in the Haynes manual, and it's difficult to tell whether it's an easy DIY fix - it just refers to lubricating & freeing the mechanism IIRC (haven't got the car or book in front of me, it's now 200 miles away with my son at uni). ANyone any ideas. or is it a garage job? TIA Read more

A pal was asked to look at a fuel leak on a neighbours 53 Merc. There was diesel dripping from a hose from the fuel filter where it connects onto a black component at the top of the engine at the front. An o-ring had failed. This was replaced and now the car won't start. Could you please tell me what this component is and have you any ideas why the car won't start. Thank you in anticipation.

Thank you for your replies. I rang my pal with your suggestions and he told me he had got the car started. As air was in the system this feed pump was very difficult to prime. He fitted a hand prime pump before the fuel filter and primed the line to the feed pump. Once this happened the car started. Thanks again

I was at a SEAT dealer the other day and there was a new notice saying if you use the newest type of Morrisons bio-diesel you will invalidate the warranty on your fuel system, including various bits of the engine. The notice said this new diesel contains 30% (I think that was the proportion) of bio diesel (mixed in with the regular stuff) which was not compatable with the engine. Read more

"I loved the old PSA XUD engines, did over 100k in my Citroen BX and it was still running sweet when I chopped it in,"

And I did 170k and 140k in my 2 BXs before selling them on (I know the 170k one did over 200k because I sold it to a friend - and he remained a friend!!) - but our Xantia HDi, now with over 100k on it is going to have to keep going a fair bit longer yet!
Much as I loved the old Bxs, the HDi is far better - in performance and economy.
By the way our mileages are nothing for an XUD - quote below taken from "French Car forum a few years ago:-
"I drive a BX diesel which I use as a taxi. It's my 5th. BX 19 diesel & all gave me the greatest satisfaction in both reliability & economy. I still have my 1987 BX which I cannibalise for spares, not that I need many. It was retired for 'scrap' after a crash @ 350,000 miles. It's replacement was sold off for less than the value of its parts @ 450,000 miles; one has been retired to my driveway @ 740,000miles & my current workhorse is now @ 380,000 miles. I've never changed a wheel-bearing, only one gearbox and a few suspension bits; one major engine overhaul; two head-jobs but never a tow-home failure"
