Pal of mine is scratching his head over what seems to be a very simple problem. He has disconnected the battery leads and can't see any obvious clamping mechanism but the battery won't lift out of its housing. It seems to be a tight fit in the housing but something also appears to be holding it in place. Is he missing something? Read more

Just bumping this back up the list in case anyone else has an idea or specialist knowledge and missed it at the weekend. Maybe I should phone Sarkozy - he's often seen in a 607 and they say he listens to anybody...

rear washer on the hatchback is not working.... Front is fine.

The washer reservoir seems to be emptying itself very fast......

I filled it up last night, went out for the evening, and it was empty by the time I got home, although couldn't feel any leaks around the container.....

Suspicious there may be a split somewhere.

Can't hear the mototr going from inside the car when I rotate the switch (it goes for the front OK)

This would make me think either the switch is faulty or if there's a separate motor thats gone

There are no details of the washer system in the haynes manual....

Is there a separate motor for the front & rears, ( only my celica has only one fluid pump for both (how does it switch fluid between front and rear - electric valve ??) )

(Rear) Read more

UPDATE

Pump is working on rear

Drivers-side rear footwel, and drivers footwell seem to be filling with washer fluid.

Clearly the piep has split/come adrift inside the car

Anyone know where the pipe is routed ??

The pipe exits the bodyshell at the top of the tailgate opening - does this mean the pipe goes across the headlining (thats not showing any signs of damp)

or does it go all the way along the floor then up one of the rear pillars ?
The boot area is completely dry, nothing leaking out of the tailgate either.

Tried poking the jet with a pin to check its not blocked and causing back-pressure.

I am assuming with the freezing weather we had recently that it may have frozen and this has caused it to split/push apart a union/joint..... although thought I had some fluid in it with antifreeze properties....

Where do I buy replacement tubing ? Is it a standard diameter/type for most cars ?

What price would this be on a dealer's forecourt?

This seller has a very high throughput of good looking vehicles - interested to know if they are getting better prices on Ebay than they would on the forecourt? Read more

I paid £2800 privately for a similar (identical spec, but saloon) Passat earlier this year. 53 plate, 90k on it and thought I got quite a good deal.

I haven't even seen one of these on the roads yet! Can anyone give some ownership feedback on them? Read more

Finally sat in one on Monday. Octavia has an intermittent beep and had some time to kill at the dealer.

One disappointment was how close to the roof my head was when I sat in the back, back seats are set higher than the front and my head (6' 2" tall and not especially long back) was so close to the roof I could not get my hand between the two. Plenty of leg room but a back problem means I sit properly and don't slump.

Too big or the two of us.

At least one person will be buying a new car soon - well as soon as the cheque from the MB driver's Ins Co arrives.

If you only ever drive an automatic, then left-foot braking makes perfect sense - though as HJ says if you don't like it, don't.

But if you drive both automatics and manuals - and SWMBO has always had manuals even when I've had automatics - then I wouldn't recommend it. As someone rightly said above, we all have ocasional lapses in concentration, and starting fron rest is a particular time when you may have other things on your mind, having just come from some other activity.

All the automatics I've had have not allowed you to engage Drive or Reverse without your foot being firmly on the brake. I hope that's universal. Mercedes have this safeguard - presumably on all their models: so if this driver accelerated suddenly she must have already been in Drive, and thus it could equally have happened in a manual.

I am experiencing a rather bizarre problem - I cannot unlock the car with the remote control or with the key. Each time I try it immediately locks itself again. I can open the hatchback with the key. Can anyone help? Read more

HJ's review of the QUBO says the 1.3 engine is 1248cc. Surely that should be a 1.2 then?

I couldn't find the cc on the Fiat website, but Parkers says the same as above. Read more

Yes - a 1.1 Golf wouldn't have pulled the skin of a rice pudding. The 1.3 was slow too: we were looking at the '1.5' which from memory was also a bit short of 1500 cc.

Random thought - isn't it strange that for many, many years - certainly when I was a child in the 50s - we have been quite happy to take a lead from industry and think about litres and cubic centimetres when measuring the size of an engine, yet outside industry we were to be faithfully Imperial for years to come.

Okay - your opinions please!

Having gone for a more expensive car than I would have normally, for the sake of a modern efficient high mpg diesel engine - only to have electronic problems needing dealer attention.

Interested in your opinion of pre-electronic wizardry diesels. Also whether worth going to a tax exempt classic and putting in a modern diesel to avoid paying the government any more money either! Read more

Back on the topic,

dashboard is lit up like a christmas tree and the car beeping incessantly when driven

My '01 Octavia 1.9SDi would sometimes do this, but the warning lights and beeps would self-cancel after 10 engine starts without the relevant fault being flagged up. So after tripping all the warnings I would sit there and start the engine 10 times in succession. On the 11th go, no warnings and everything was fine until the next time...

This did leave the error codes in the fault memory for the dealer at the next service, but at least I didn't have lots of red and yellow lights showing in the meantime.
