Has the engine on this model a belt driven cam and if so how often should it be changed? Need I use Nissan coolant for a change or will the universal type stuff do?
The vehicle has done 55k and although the service book is stamped up it is not clear what other jobs have been done. The main dealer who stamped the book is no longer trading so I can't ask them. Any advice on which jobs i should do or get done? Thanks.

This "feature", where if you direct air to the screen, the a/c (but not the a/c indicator lamp) comes on, is becoming annoying.

I came across a US forum on Honda Jazz, where Jazz does this is the US and it explained how to disable it (disconnect the switch behind the air distibution knob). Apparently on some Hondas pressing a combination of the a/c and recirc buttons will disable it.

Does anyone know if this function can be easily disabled on Colt? Read more

Having just had a dig at Toyota for their inability to get it right first time even with a car like the Corolla, I also want to point out a mod that was recently done FOC during the 2 year service of my Accord. There is a mod that they conduct on the front headlamps to stop them misting up/condensing. So to all you Accord owners - best make sure you have it done. Read more

I've also got an xtrail - 18 month old petrol auto - after the first service it didn't seem to go as well after the service as it had before - at the service they put in a fuel additive, not asked for, as the car was going very well apart from only 25 MPG fuel consumption - anyway it made me wonder, could if they had put in diesel additive in the petrol car have caused the drop off in performance and could the wrong additive cause permanant damage? - I like the car a lot but the dealers I have had contact with are rubbish - I dread having to take it to the dealers for the warranty servicing - puts one off buying a new car.

I should have mentioned to also check any and all causes of rolling drag; anything from a flat tyre to seized calipers or handbrake cables.... [Alfas don't do that; do they?]

I wish to purchase the above purely as a second car for hauling 2 dogs about and sometimes a bit of shooting gear. Always thought about a Jimny as I believe they are excellent off road, but having had a peek at one or two think that they are going to be too small. Now would a Vitara fit the bill do you think. It would need to be an Auto for swmbo and quite frankly that suits me best too. A/C is a big bonus with wet Lab's. I have seen several on Auto trader, late nineties 2-4k various mileages and at first glance don't seem too expensive, but I guess that if a dealer is selling them they probably are as I am a cynical swine. How do they shape up at this age, rust, auto box etc. Any views and advice on Suzuki or a credible alternative most welcome.

Very best regards.............Martin. Read more

BTW before you buy one of these cars make sure that you have a good
long test run in one. The on-road handling is a bit rudimentary. I'm not sure
I could live with one. If its mainly an off-road plaything then it would probably
be OK.

Strangely enough the guy that owns it covers many miles and has done some long runs, and well and loaded at times. He never baulks about the handling despite being a huge chap, 18+ stone, but I agree with the rest of the world that it is pitchy etc., but it wouldn't be used as anything other than a dog cart, shooting hack or a weekend trip to the park etc.

Maybe I'll get over the urge soon, but I've already mentioned it to the young dog and she never forgets and awaits the outcome with eager anticipation..............or that's what her tail tells me!

From the DT
Peter Hall addresses criticism of last week's article about offical road safety policy

Speed kills...
Following our publication last week of part of a chapter from a new book on the dangers of scare stories by Christopher Booker and Richard North, all-purpose ecomentalist George Monbiot this week accused the authors of "intellectual dishonesty" and of "ignoring inconvenient facts".

Here, then, are some more facts, which Mr Monbiot may or may not regard as inconvenient. Based on its first survey of the causes of accidents (in 2005), the Department for Transport (DfT) has revealed that exceeding the speed limit is a factor in only two per cent of injury crashes involving drivers over the age of 25. For younger drivers, aged 17-25, the percentage is six per cent, and for the youngest, aged 17-19, it is eight per cent. Travelling too fast for the conditions, rather than exceeding the legal speed limit, is a factor in five, 11 and 14 per cent of crashes respectively. For full details see section 2.5 of the memorandum at www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200607/
cmselect/cmtran/355/7032102.htm

This is not the first time the DfT has disproved its own assertion (over many years) that speeding causes a third of all road accidents; in September last year it was forced to publish figures showing that only five per cent of road accidents involve a vehicle exceeding the speed limit.

While fully supporting law enforcement, many concerned citizens have therefore wondered whether the most effective way to reduce accidents is to replace police traffic patrols with speed cameras. However, such questions do not disturb the intellectual certainty of Mr Monbiot. According to his article in Tuesday?s Guardian, critics of official policy, including road safety experts and serving police officers, are nothing more than ?swaggering petrolheads?.

A case of "Please do not put facts in the way of my plan" ?

I'll have to disagree you on that one. Usual failure has been because of overheating
false economy not to get it skimmed.

Sam,

K Series heads do not require skimming as (a) they're actually pretty tough and don't warp and (b) there is very little tolerance in the head for this. In the past skimming a head was routine but this engine is an exception. In the case of the K it's a mistake to apply general mechanic's rules like this one.

Hi,

Has anyone or do you know of anyone that has dealings with this company please?

They are a dual fuel company based in Grimsby: www.automotive-solutionsltd.co.uk/ and they have a good stock of cars and fleet vehicles available that are not only manufacturer fitted but LPG conversions done by themselves.

To date, my own experience of dealings with AMS has been a good one and I am looking at 'closing a purchase' with this company in the next week or so.

So far, talking on the phone and initial enquiries via emails about cars available that are dual fuel, have been more than very good.

How was your/their experience in comparison?
