On saturdayI travelled 150 Miles to look at a tidy 1990 Range Rover I ended up buying, drove it back but 3 Miles from home, it decided to throw a con rod out the side of the block.
Do i have any come back against the bloke i bought it from Read more
Found a puddle in the passenger footwell of my 306 today, and thought I had a leaky door. After soaking it up, realised it smelt of coolant, and sure enough, opened the reservoir and I've lost several pints. Thinking back to yesterday, I did turn the heater on for a few minutes, and it smelt of coolant.
I changed the coolant about 10 months ago and flushed the system, so I've done what I think I should have done maintenance-wise? It's a 1996 306 diesel with 49k on it.
What is the problem? Heater matrix? How do I get at the system and find the leak? Any help much appreciated. Thanks. Read more
only pipes i remember are in the engine bay running through to the matrix so would still require removing parts.
ive done several heater matrixes and no there not 2 bad if you don't mind bending up under the dash and watching the dash get stripped bare, ive found removing the front seats helps alot and a decent digital camera and plenty of containers with lids for the bits. the new part is about £40 from euro car parts but as has been said it's 9 hours book time or a whole weekend for a beginner, or the thick end of £400
id say do it yourself with a haynes manual it's simple just not fun

Hiya i have been looking at getting my windows tinted on a budget. i have tried using the film and made a hash of it. I found on ebay that you can now buy window tint in a can. Has anyone ever tried this. If so what does the overall affect look like. Any problems you found. Cheers Read more
"Can you tell me where I can get my car sprayed with berebery cheque?"
Query on your last question. Do you want your car sprayed in a "thiamine deficiency order to transfer money"(beriberi cheque), or in the trench, black, white and red Novacheck pattern" (Burberry check)?
In answer to the originator, I have found tinted windows invaluable for security and comfort, keeping both sunlight, and prying eyes out. My only advice would be to splash out and get them done properly, with some accountability for quality borne by the supplier/fitter and heed the VOSA regulations in the link provided by our "gatropodous" contributor.
Hi all,
The boot handle on my car has fallen off. I have the handle and can still use it to open the boot but the mechanism that used to hold the handle in place has broken so it falls out pretty much every time the boot is shut.
From the look of the handle I am guessing that it was held in place by a small rubber ring that fitted round the end of the shaft (the part is roughly T shaped with the cross-piece being the grip and the down-piece being the part that triggers the release mechanism.
Can anyone confirm that this is the case? And can it be replaced or is it a sealed unit?
Many thanks,
Duncan

Found them listed amongst HJ's useful links here and wondered if anyone had used them to either buy or sell for them?
I've got two dealers looking for a Spec B but no joy after a 2 weeks and there are very few on Autotrader.

I should have added very few in the price bracket and spec I'm after. I think it gets down to about 4 cars!
Hi All
Recently the past few days, my 1.6 petrol overhead cam (8 valve) has been making this clattering noise, More noticable on startup, and then quitens down when the engine has got warmed up, clatering increases in noise when REVS are raised, the car has only done 35k, and has been serviced within the past 6 months, however Ive noticed that the oil had dropped down to a quarter way of the min mark
Im hoping that this is one the the hydralic valve lifters not getting enough pressure due to the oil level been low, thefore a top up should resolve?
Can anyone give me some advise
Many Thanks

A mate of mine has an 06 Freelander as a company car. It's the van version which means no rear seats and metal panels where the rear windows normally are. It's just gone in under warranty for bad rusting around the above-mentioned rear panels. Not just a minor bubble either. Nice red streaks down the bodywork. According to the dealer, there's a bit of waiting list for rear panels because of this problem and in bad cases some welding of a new lip on the rear window aperture is required. I saw the rusting myself but the other information is third-hand so don't take it as gospel unless someone else can verify it.
Just thought I'd post this in case anyone is thinking of getting one. Make sure you look closely and ask if any warranty work has been done. Read more
Reckon Frelanders are galvanised though the "window" panel is probably not and is almost certainly fitted post production.
Could anyone help with giving me rough cost of replacing lock on a ford fiesta 1997, for one door only. Read more
Are we talking about the lock or the barrel here?
My reply earlier was assuming it was the lock.
If it is the barrel I had these problems on my 1990 escort about 14

Apart from my Mazda323 diesel I need a second car as a local runaround. It'll mainly be used as a shopping trolley and for my part time job as a pizza delivery driver.
I'm thinking of getting Pug 106 (feeling brave enough again after my horrendous experience with Pug in the past). My budget is less than a grand so I would like to know which one would be more reliable a petrol or diesel 106? I'm not looking for any electrics apart from power steering. Read more
106 naturally aspirated diesel is the slowest modern car I've ever driven.
Friend has a 1.1 petrol that drives nicely but has suffered a lot of niggles including cooling system.
Student (age 20) at my work place has bought an old car for his mother as a present, he already owns a car but now wants to drive the gift car to scotland from cornwall. However he keeps getting told by several insurance companies that as he is under 21 they will not give him temp cover on a second car. His only option seems to be insure the car as his own (second car) then cancel the insurance when the car is delivered....which seems rather stupid (from insurace company point of view) and not sure if insurance companies will let him do this anyway without a penalty.
Any suggestions?
thanks
S.
As it is a surprise his mother must know nothing about it...so difficult to insure under her name...

UPDATE
The 1994 2 litre Volvo bought for under £300 (98K, 1 yr MOT) drove all the way to scotland from Cornwall (9hrs) with no problems, no excessive oil consumption and 28 - 30 mpg at errr 80ish mph, no faults noticed...
Student was almost reluctant to part with it. We were all impressed. Just shows with some luck, there are old cars out there with no faults for bargain basement prices - just a lottery trying to get one!
In the end he just told insurance company he had changed cars, the changed back again, no problem. Other car was kept off road.

IF he is a decent guy, he'll take the car back to the guy who did the engine with the offending part and try to get it done for you.
he could even try "I found a socket under the bonnet, is it yours?" then when the engine repair person says "yes I've been looking for that", you play the trump card.
...But many ifs and buts...
