hi there, i have an old vw polo 1984 hatchback 1050cc with a weber conversion that i have had for many years now. 16 to be exact.
a year ago i had to have a new radiator fitted and had the head gasket repaired.since that time i have been plagued with carb icing in cold weather. i have replace the cold weather hose from the carb to rad and in my haynes manual noticed a cure for this as fit radiator blind (does anyone know what this entails?) prior to the new rad i had the problem but did have it sorted out, but unfortunately that mechanic who knew what he was doing retired and not many others know what on earth they are doing resulting in messing around with the carb jets, mixture etc causing more problems. apart from this winter problem my little old polo is fab and i dont really wish to swop it for anything else.
i would appreciate anyones input who has experience with this prob. my partner is very good with my car but he hasnt experienced this ever before and with the right info could poss cure it.
many thanks

What tap. The only tap under the cover is a blled screw for the cooling system as this is the highest part of the system. Regards Peter

>>You're right in that the design is no longer retro and will not be to the taste of some Jaguar drivers. <<
I think my customer pointed out that aside from it being a bit Mondeo-ish from behind, the fact that they had abandoned the twin headlamps at the front, a feature which he felt really separated a Jag from other prestige makes on the road and made it instantly recognisable, was what had spoilt it for him.
He doesnt have the current XJ because he thinks its got too bulky looking, which it has and he praised the sleeker look of the XF, but I think his concern is that it has become just a little too detached from previous Jaguar styling cues and keeping a few of them, albeit in a contempory way, would have shown its lineage.
He said he was sure it would drive brilliantly and he said the interior is a work of art and I agree, but he doesnt own the Jaguar he has now because it was the most spacious or the best driving large saloon, but because it has 'that look' - otherwise he would buy a Lexus, the choice of any obsessive compulsive luxury car owner!
is it normal for the a/c to come on everytime i start the car, i dont have a user manual so i cant look it up,
also, when i unlock the car the boot stays locked so i have to use the boot unlock button on the keyfob everytime...really annoying
also, can the drivers side window be set to one touch closure
gratefull for any help...thanks. Read more
There may well have been a recall regarding that switch. Might be worth talking to the dealer.
Hello,
This might help others:
On Saturday the Mondeo's a/c blower fan sounded like an RR Merlin when cranked up to demist.
A new motor required I thought, dash out etc :-(
No, the glove box comes out in 1 min, a bit of trim below it in another two mins and the fan motor another two mins later, the fan is a basket vane fan it had a leaf caught in it, this must have been making the fan unbalanced, all is now well :-)
How did the leaf get there? The (newly fitted) pollen filter had come unclipped leaving a small gap, also easily recitfied.

Ha ha, I agree that there is nothing wrong with the sound of a Merlin, there's a time and a place though !
I hate people tailgating me at any time, but in mist and fog I hate it all the more.
I had another example last week while on the road between Whaley Bridge and Macclesfield at 06:30 a.m. If there is any mist about it will be near to the Pott Shrigley turnoff. It was a thick mist such as I have not met for many years. I was doing the maximum that I dared (about 45) down a straight stretch with a minor change in direction, perhaps 5 degrees at most. The tailgater was so close that I had to bend my rear view mirror right down because dipping it wasn?t enough. I was watching for the direction change but out of deference to the long queue behind me I was really going too fast and had to take quick action to avoid the grassy bank. The effect on the tailgater was quite marked From being a few metres behind he suddenly was about 50 metres and remained that way.
The last time that happened was when I met up with a dozen or so Mallard ducks crossing the road, walking as they do, in single file. I imagine that they would be nice to eat, but I could imagine chewing raw flesh, feathers and bits of windscreen at 40 mph. I braked quite sharply to avoid them and then left the following two cars, tailgaters both, had to sort out the affair with their insurance companies by themselves.

Part of the problem is that the lead car tends to 'clear' a path through the fog, so following drivers don't appreciate how thick it actually is.
I still remember driving down the A1 many years ago when the fog was so thick I couldn't even see the white lane markings immediately in front. A car that had been following for some time decided to overtake, but immediately slowed down when the driver realised the true lack of visibility!
Rover 414i S reg. Driving along and rover engine just died. When you turn the key the engine is trying to turn over but just dosn't quite make it to start engine. I pressed the fuel pump reset switch which clicked but still didnt help. Any ideas anyone

Hi all,
I moved to the UK a little more than a year ago. My US license is expiring next month but I cannot renew it since I am not an American, and only used to live there prior to moving the UK. I do not have a car, but plan to buy one since I am starting a new job.
I've done some research but still have a few questions. It would be great if any of you can provide some help.
1. If I apply for a UK provisional license, can I drive alone, or do I need somebody on my side at all times?
2. How long after I get the provisional license before I can sit on a test?
3. When it is time for practical test, whose car can I use to take the test?
4. Is it advisable for me to take a driving lesson from RAC, etc, or are they a waste of time/money considering that I have about 12 years of driving experience?
Truly appreciate any help you can provide.
Cheers! Read more

I would recommend phoning a few driving schools to discuss your requirements.
