Funny noise, down to the dealer, frozen brake caliper, new pads and new disc; £628. Anyone else had this "one-off" problem? Read more
Difficult to comment on this because I'm not sure what a 'disk brake kit' is - could it be a caliper or caliper rebuild kit?
Ideally they should replace discs and pads in axle sets - it looks like they only replace one disc, which is not really best practise.
If the car is out of warranty then better to take it to an independent next time - there are quite a few Scooby independents about.
Reports on the Beeb say the AA has found silicon in some cars...

Interesting thought, can the combustion products from the contaminated fuel poison
the sensors used in the commercial 4/5 gas analysers?
or does contamination only take place over a significant period of
time
pmh
Oxygen cells in a gas-analyser can certainly be poisoned; whether this particular contaminant in the, now cold, sample would harm it is a moot point. The cells have a fairly short life and are regularly changed anyway - often at the 3-monthly calibration visits. [Another £400-a-time cost that the customer doesn't see.]
I tried renewing my tax disc online last night, only to find that no record existed on the 'insurance database'. "What!!!", I thought - then realised to my horror that I'd not mentioned the car's personal plate change to my insurers. The certificate of insurance still has the old registration number on it.
Before I even attempt it, is there any point going down to the post office to renew the tax? The tax disc reminder, MoT and V5C all have the new registration number but, as mentioned above, the insurance certificate still refers to the old number. I still have all the paperwork (including the old MoT certificate) returned from DVLA which shows the old number and stamped as "Cherished transfer re-registered as ....(new number)".
In my experience, post office counter staff can be 'jobsworths' when it comes to car tax - seemingly suspecting that you're trying to pull a fast one. So would it be better just to advise my insurers (which of course I will do) and wait for the details to be updated on the database (any ideas how long that would take?) before applying online again? i was wondering if he was insured or not. He
had insurance on the car, but the number plate has changed.
So, technically is he insured or not.
My first thought was definitely not, but then changed my mind.
Eventually came to the conclusion that it would be an
easy get out clause for the insurance co.
Any thoughts?
He will be insured. The number is not a material fact. A number won't stop or cause an accident. The Insurer has taken the money and been placed on risk. No court of law will uphold retention of a payout/claim because of an incorrect number. It is not a MATERIAL FACT.

What is the safest place to re-fuel now in the South East???
I have Shell and Esso near my home.
Are these safe?
BP Ultima is nowhere near my home.
I am not affected till now. Read more
Is the high octane Shell V Power and BP Ultimate stuff affected?
If not it may be worth filling up with that if you can, I know a couple of quid more for a tank but may prevent trouble.
My friend is thinking about downsizing from a Picasso to either a Renault Modus, Merc A class or C3.
I said the A class has bad reputation, but I dont know much about the others. Which engines/models are the ones to go for.
Also are there any other models he should consider.
thanks

Sister-in-law and Wife's best friend each have a C3 (1.4 petrol - I think in SX trim) and are very happy with them. In both cases they are used mostly around town for ferrying a couple of children under 5. Boot is surprisingly deep - ideal for baby buggy / shopping.
Hi
I paid a 500 pound deposit at a main dealer fo a new car I did this over the phone and did not sign an order form at all. The car I wanted to buy (an EOS) now turns out to have many problems with leaks rattles and other assortd problems . I faxed the dealer to cancel the order ,which they have done, but now are not prepared to refund the deposit Where do I stand?
Thanks

So you haven't even actually seen the car in question, and you've decided to reject it?
Wow. I bet your local car dealers have your picture on the wall: "Do not sell to this man"!
I would say you haven't a leg to stand on withr egards to reclaiming your deposit (unless the distance selling regs come into force, as stated above)
Well, we all know, because people supposedly with industry knowledge like HJ regularly write it in newspaper columns, that supermarket petrol is cheap for a reason; it is poorer quality than 'proper' petrol from BP, Shell, etc.
Isn't it strange that in the current wave of hysteria that Shell and Texaco petrol is alleged to have been affected just as much as supermarket petrol.
Doesn't that just go to show that the old chestnut about supermarket petrol being different to - and hence inferior to - 'proper' petrol is a load of nonsense.

>>I can't help wondering if it's the fuel that's made a difference.>>
The fact that you buy your Esso petrol at a Tesco Express outlet, yet believed temporary use of Shell made a difference is probably coincidence.
The fuel you buy at Tesco Express has nothing to do with Tesco's own petrol stations' service - the company has an agreement to set up its convenience stores on many Esso stations, with Esso continuing to supply motorists with fuel.
You've probably noticed that the Tesco Express outlet will not give you ClubCard points on any fuel you buy.

What\'s for you won\'t pass you by
Well... where do I start!
Bought an A3 2.0 tdi from audi main dealer 1 last week, he took my golf for £7500 and I left a £6k deposit. I signed paperwork and when I came to pick it up a few days later the car was in an appaling state- FULL of stonechips and scratches. I immediately said I could not accept this- the manager came out and apologised saying that the car should never have reached the forecourt in that state. They then were quite pushy and sold me a 1.9 TDI, great bodywork i test drove it and thought i could deal with it. However, speaking to my father in law on the sunday, he said that frequent trips to France in a 1.9 tdi would be stupid if I had enough to buy a 2.0 tdi. Had a think about it, and he was right, so i phoned the audi dealer 1, apologised, and said it definately was a 2.0 tdi i was after.
I then found a 2.0 tdi 30 miles away at audi main dealer 2, and when i got there the salesman told me that audi main dealer 1 wasn't part of the same group, so i would need my money back. Thought this was unbelievable, he more or less asked me to lie to audi main dealer 1saying i'd found another car and wanted my money back.
The Audi dealer 1 sussed out i was lying, and then i told him that i more or less had to lie to him as i wanted this other audi from main dealer 2. They then had an hours conversation and then the main dealer 2 guys told me "its yours, they bought it for you". Ring them tommorow morning to sign the paperwork.
I did do just that, but later on found out by reading the receipt that it was a sport version, which has a much stiffer ride. Because they'd argued for so long on the phone I hadn't even been offered a test drive so how would I have known about the fact that it was a sport version. No one told me, and my partner did not pick up on this either. We have now found a 56 plate SE version (costing £3k more) that we both think is perfect but audi dealer 1 is refusing to let me change again, even though I am prepared to pay full price today and the car is within their group. I know i changed my mind on the 1.9 but on the two other occasions it was their fault. Where do I stand? Read more

The 1.4 Pug 206 also depends on the spec level.
Example: 206 LX is a lower group then the 206 GLX even with the same lump fitted
