Legacy Outback Front Brakes - Ed V
Funny noise, down to the dealer, frozen brake caliper, new pads and new disc; £628. Anyone else had this "one-off" problem?

Oh no - Subaru was the last remaining make that nobody had any problems with!

Was it outside warranty and you had to pay? Did the dealer say it was a common fault?

What did the funny noise sound like - I sometimes feel a vibration through the pedal when braking a little harder than normal - ie harder than just gently slowing down but not throwing out the anchor braking.

News to me. My Outback is still performing AOK. Oooh I do love that sport setting on the autobox!

Front caliper siezure is unusual unless the car is seldom used or left standing out for a long time. Rears are more likely to sieze.

The price you paid is totally insane. A front caliper rebuild kit (inc. 4 new pistons) retails at about £80. Good quality aftermarket discs are about £40 each and a set of pads around the £30-40 mark.

Allowing an hours labour this job should not come in at over £300 tops - assuming they replace both discs (which they should) and lube the non-siezed side.

Labour: £141, MRP Brake Pad Kit: £54, 2 MRP Brake Disc-FRT Turbo:£97, Disk Brake Kit RH: £253, Donation to Treasury: £96. Total: £649.31.
Noise was like metal on metal, which it was. The only indication I had a day earlier was slight shuddering for a very short time, but that was a one-off - I'd guess the ABS was applying but not such as to slow the car down, and due to the slow releasing brakes.

Difficult to comment on this because I'm not sure what a 'disk brake kit' is - could it be a caliper or caliper rebuild kit?

Ideally they should replace discs and pads in axle sets - it looks like they only replace one disc, which is not really best practise.

If the car is out of warranty then better to take it to an independent next time - there are quite a few Scooby independents about.
