Rattle

I finally fixed it this morning.

I have discovered after a 4-6 mile journey the gauge is in the middle is this normal? My dads escort would only do this after about 60 miles or so. The radiator fan does not come on at all so I am wondering if this is connected.

If I touch the radiator its hot but it dosn't burn me, the engine itself is really quite hot, after 5 miles the manifold would burn me if I touch it too long.

Am I right in thinking the heat my not be getting to the radiator properly? There are no signs of any leaks and the hoses are fine but I guess there may be an air lock.

Also the anti freeze seems to bubbling a little bit in the expansion tank, but I have lost no coolant at all in the past 50 miles and the steam I was getting was just condensation so there is no sign of any head gasket failure at all. Read more

A quick check of the fan is to bridge out the two wires that control the fan to see if it works? not sure were it is on your car either the rad or themostat housing, if it works great may req a new switch, but your car seem's quite normal as mentioned DON'T TOUCH THE MANIFOLD!! it will get very hot in less than a minute thats the idea to expell the heat quick.
give it a run from time to time to stop the mayo and you will have got it just right!! good luck..

Need to use a Citroen ZX Diesel (non turbo) for a few weeks while car is being repaired. I bought it through through the small ads in the local rag and is a genuine 2 owner 97 car. the previous owner had the car for six years and as a pensioner he says he never went over 50 mph. I'd like to get it up to 70 mph if possible - any ideas of what I ned to do re service items etc. Thanks Read more

Well oil changed and all filters. Good dose of 'Forte' and yipee will sit at 70-75 all day long. Very comfortable it is too! Thanks everyone.

My Accord Tourer will be three years old at the beginning of March, so yesterday I booked it in for service and MOT for 28th February. I was asked if |I wanted an emissions service for it - £19.99 + vat, and a brake check with the wheels off - extra again. I refused these, on impulse, as I have paid quite a bit for a service which has basically been an oil change.

I'm amazed that a service does not include removing the wheels for a service for a Honda. When my Omega was serviced I was always asked for the key for the wheels.

I haven't done a huge mileage - 17,000 - and that has been long journeys, mainly to France each year. I won't use the car for just a couple of miles.

Should I pay extra for an emissions service and a brake check with the wheels removed?

These days a dealer service only seems to include a visual brake check. I had trouble with one rear brake locking on the Yaris untill I entrusted the servicing to a local guy who includes a full strip down and clean.

Does anyone else sell the equivalent of BP's Ultimate Diesel? Can't believe Shell, Esso etc... are letting BP steal a march on them. Read more

Shells V-power diesel currently available at only 30 outlets.

I filled up with this in France last week and got some nifty Audi TDI Le Mans stickers for the kids.

Surprised that my 2.8 V6 Galaxy RFL renewal (£175) was less than my 2.5 V6 TDi Passat (£195). I would have thought they'd both be spitting out the same amount of noxious gases, but apparently not . Where can I find more info? Read more

Interesting. My Galaxy is a '99 model and is rated at 288 g/Km in the vehicle database, which would cost £210 if it was new. But being so old (the car, not me), I'm getting away with "only" £175 :-)

Hi all

My wife's 98 Micra has just passed its MOT. The garage told me that the driveshaft gaiter on one side was beginning to crack, but that it wasn't bad enough to fail the MOT. In fact, they have just noted it on their checklist, not actually made it an 'advisory'. They also said that there was no rush to change it, and it can wait until the next service which will probably be in October.

As this is my wife's car, I clearly don't want to take any risks over her safety or that of our kids. So my questions are as follows :

a) Do you think it's OK to wait until October?

b) If the gaiter fails, is this a safety issue? What will happen?

c) How can I tell if the gaiter is about to fail? Is this something I can easily check myself (not being mechanically-minded)?

d) How much is it likely to cost to get the gaiter replaced?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The problem won't go away - have the joint replaced.

As an aside I was warned about cracking boots in 2002. Since then, 38,000 miles, and 4 different MoT garages, none have been replaced or mentioned.

Always worth getting a second opinion. I would if I were you as I wouldn't trust a garage that tells me a problem will go away of its own accord.

Some of you may remember my earlier post about a parking ticket that a recently got. I wrote a letter to the council pleading my case which they 'rejected' as I exptected them to. Well like a good tax paying member of society (or a mug) a paid the fine.

But what really bugs me is that I paid £2.20 for my pay and display ticket and feel that I'm entitled to a refund. Yes, I do have much better things to do with my life but as matter of principle I'm prepared to give up an hour or maybe two to get my £2.20 back. Does anyone on here understand the legal side of this? My limited understanding is that I paid the fine due to a 'breach of contract', if that is the case then surely I'm entitled to my £2.20 back?

A quick summary of facts for those who missed the other post - went to get change for pay and display, got back just as warden put ticket on car. Warden advised still buy pay and display ticket and appeal, said he would note on PCN that I had returned to the car. Pay and display ticket bought 3 minutes after warden issed PCN, council rejected my plea for forgiveness. Read more

If I was in charge of the parking department, I would have you arrested for fraud. You obviously bought the ticket after the offence , in an attempt to pervert the course of justice! ;)
