I had the misfortune to run a 3500S in the baking summer of '76. It's the fuel pump that causes the problem - and the lack of a return line. The most successful quick-fix was to wrap the pump in a [well-secured] cloth and soak it in water.

Maybe a deflector plate to stop the fan blowing hot air straight at the pump would help? Fitting a proper return line would be the best bet. As said; that wing-mounted unit off a carb Sierra might fit the bill.

All,

I've been searching the net for information regarding the peugeot 205 XA GL as if it is a van or car.

I've not found any info anywhere to give me the info i require, even parkers won't tell me.

Could someone point me in the right direction or even if someone knows about this particular model that would be even better.

Thanks

My L reg Auto Golf (1993) 1.8 has failed its MOT today on the emissions test. Not particulary unexpected as has black smoke coming from the exhaust! Garage useless and told me to go to a Bosch dealer. Does anyone have any ideas? Its been garaged for a month but still starts easily from cold and runs well. Is it likely to be something expensive?

Many Thanks.

A Golf 1.8 is a petrol engine. The car needs to be code read, codes cleared, driven and code read again.

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum so go easy on me but I read the HJ's column without fail every week. Basically, I have 4k to 4 1/2k to spend on a newish car. I'm looking at a Mondeo hatch as these seem to be the best value for money and are reliable. I am after an 02 or 03 130 diesel which I've seen advertised privately for around this sort of money. If I can sell my current car privately, I am considering buying at an auction at a reputable place like BCA at Belle Vue Manchester. Will £4k get me an ex-fleet with around 80k on the clock on a face lift model? I've heard horror stories about auctions but my mate has just bought an ex-fleet C-Max without any problems. Will £4k get me something half decent and avoid the 'dodgy motor' trap as I am not a car expert!?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Cheers. Read more

If you are really interested in a car, ask the auctioneer at the rostrum if it has a stamped up service history. SH can mean a service book with a PDI and absolutely nothing else in it and all perfectly legal. Ideally the car will come from a known fleet and have a much better, itemised print out of every scrap of work done to the vehicle.

From HJ today for those who did not see it.

"Driving down the M20 in very wet conditions recently, I hit a large puddle at 70mph. My BMW 325i aquaplaned, then skidded violently. Only luck and the absence of other road users avoided a potentially serious accident. My car has 29,500 miles on the clock and is still on its original tyres, although they are due to be changed soon. I have driven in similar conditions before without mishap. Could this incident be down to misfortune or might there be other contributing factors of which I am unaware?"

"Your tyres are at the limit of their ability to disperse water because they are worn out.
Don't economise by making tyres last in winter - change them tomorrow. "

"Also, don't use cruise control on a rear-wheel-drive car in very wet conditions. The speed sensors are on the front wheels and if the rear wheels start to spin they might start to do so uncontrollably in an effort to maintain the car's pre-set speed."

I've bought a '95 Vauxhall Omega which has all the owner paperwork except the service book is missing. The car has a low number of previous owners and I can see from the limited amount of receipts it was ex-Network Q.

I have a copy of February 2006's Car Mechanics which seems to suggest that some manufacturers will provide, either free or for a small fee, a copy of service printouts from their central database if the car was dealer serviced.

Has anyone done something similar with their Vauxhall, and if so is it best to go to the local dealer's service manager, the supplying dealer, or Vauxhall themselves? I'm willing to try all three but if someone else has already tried and it's a no-go, or found the experience straightforward, I'd be interested to know!

The car's value is minimal and I'm not looking for a fast buck - it's a keeper for DIY/tip duties so to this end I've already serviced it and changed the all-important cambelt and tensioner - but it would be nice to know what else has been done in it's 125,000 miles... Read more

OK thanks chaps, it was a Network Q car sold in early 1996 to a limited company who held onto it until 2004, so I thought it might be worth a go. Might give the service manager of the supplying dealership a call on the offchance it was serviced there during that time, if not it's no loss as you say.

three weeks ago I placed an order for a pre-registered vauxhall corsa with a local dealer, and paid a deposit of £100.00 - I said I would pay the balance for the car in about three weeks time. After further investigation I realised I had "bought" an old style Corsa and having since then seen the new corsa I wanted one of those, as another dealer was offering the new style corsa at £700 less that the dealer I had placed the deposit with I cancelled my order. The original dealer was not very happy, in fact they were very rude to me. However today I have received a registration certificate for the car on which I originally placed a deposit. The document states I acquired the vehicle on 31 01 2007 - please could somone give me some advice on this. Obviously I have not got the car and at no time signed the declaration stating I had bought the car so obviously the dealer has forged my signature. Read more

I would expect a fair sized bill from them. You ordered a car and they went through the motions of registering it in your name - at this time of year it can take some time. So for them to try to sell it now it will have an extra owner on it's log book.

I need the code for Ford radio M 4000 Traffic serial number - M059821. Would be obliged if anyone could help.

I have no quibbles with anyone requesting a code for their stereo, but it might well be better if they include an email address within their question so that anyone can reply directly to them. That said, I have previously replied to someone with a coding request for a 'Vauxhall' stereo giving a website that could *probably* help.

I do however (well HJ actually - but I am acting on his behalf) have issues with someone promoting their own services on here without seeking permission from HJ beforehand, hence the removal of the replies above.

I'm sure there are several on-line decoding services available that can easily be found via a google search, so any stereo thief can easily obtain codes if they so wish, but many newer stereos are now also coded to the car, so installing them in any other car than the one they're currently married up to would bea complete waste of time as they wouldn't work anyway.

ps, to show that I am not a total killjoy, if the OP of this thread wishes to contact me, I will pass on the details of the website I removed further up this post. dave_moderator@honestjohn.co.uk

Went to Plymouth and back in a couple of days in 1962 or 3, in the middle of a very snowy winter. Driving an embarrassing hired turquoise-coloured Vauxhall Victor, a sort of dwarfish Chevrolet with column change and mercifully powerful heater.

Although rear-wheel-drive and 3 speed, the thing was only stopped once by the weather, and would show some traction and remain controllable when better cars couldn't keep going at all. A most enjoyable weekend's sideways motoring, and the big-end bearing didn't really break up until back in London.

I probably wouldn't try it now, but then with climate change I wouldn't have the chance, would I?

Hi

I hope someone can help me.
My brother has a Peugeot 406 hdi that has been stood for a couple of weeks and when he went to start it this weekend the battery was flat.
Having removed the battery and recharged it, the engine immobilser (flip down pad type) now refuses to accept the code...b4 when the code was entered the red light went out and the green light came on and the engine started...now both the green and red lights stay on after the code has been entered and the car refuses to start.
I have checked all of the obvious wiring that is visible and all appears ok...
we have tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery but still both lights appear and the car still won't start

Any ideas anyone Read more
