I'm renting a car in the US this summer. The website mentions Collision Damage Waiver - what exactly is this and is it compulsory, strongly recommended, or another extra that isn't really necessary?

I have just fitted 4 new 195x65x15H tyres to my 1992 Mercedes 230E auto. This is my second complete set. 3 years and 25,1000 miles ago I fitted the first set. I put the fronts on the back, and backs on the front at about 12K. I found them fine as as most of our motoring is in London, with the occassional long run I thought the milage OK. Is this the experience of other rear wheel drive users?
Over the years I have had all the top brands and I can't honestly tell much of a difference. If you drive 'normally' and never screech off or scream around bends modern tyres seem very similar and more than adequate, although these new ones seem a bit quieter. Read more
In various reviews I have read, NCT5's only drawback which is always mentioned is Wet Performance (it's not bad, it's just not up with the best) , not surprising really for a 'Grand Touring' type Tyre.
I have no problems at all in the wet in my current car, and if I was in the market for new tyres today, I'd like to try them, but if I had a car that was not excellent in wet conditions, I'd probably get something else.
Well today was a first. Despite hearing about such things quite a bit this morning was the first time I've seen a female driver putting on make-up whilst driving. Where did this happen? On the main road passing our local infant/junior school? Yep, a mum was driving along with two hands on her make-up, eyes in the mirror concentrating on her blusher and, to make matters even worse, her young daughter rattling around unrestrained in the back no doubt admiring her mum's dexterity!
It wouldn't surprise me if she was also one of those parents who claim they have to drive their kids to/from school in the interests of safety!!!! Read more
I'm sure the little dears will soon learn to ignore red traffic lights just like their elders and betters !
Do they teach that at cycling proficiency?
I have a Mercedes C class M reg and despite having good brake pads on the front the \'\'brake pad low\'\' light is shining merrily on the dashboard. Anyone had the same problem? Read more
LOL, Aprilia - some of us never go the chance to get our hands dirty on the brakes before it was nicked!
Could any kind person help me? I\'ve got a 98 Megane coupe and i\'ve two problems. Firstly my speedo has a mind of its own. When i\'m travelling at a constant speed my speedo jumps up and down? Does anybody know what causing this? Sencondly, when i unlock my doors from the plip controller, my drivers door wont open instantly. Instead i\'ve got tot hold the handle open for a while then the door opens. The passenger door is fine. Any help would be appreciated. Read more
erratic speedo on meganes is a fairly common fault,it is not usualy the sensor on the gearbox but the wiring to it that is fractured or broken within the engine harness.Try adding an extra wire from the black wire of 3-pin connector to sensor &take other end to a body earth point.
I need to find a specialist to tighten/repair the automatic convertible roof of my beloved BMW 318i. The roof jams/gets stuck when it's folding back. It appears the tensioners need tightening.
Anyone have recommendations for a specialist in London? I've gone to BMW, but they're quoting £300 for the repair kit but this is mostly labour...but they won't guarantee it'll solve the problem. I'd like to find an alternative.
Any useful suggestions welcome.
Thanks

In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.
It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.
No Questions About PC\'s. They now go in another Thread.

If you want mobile, maybee the Dentmaster people might have a tie in with interior fixers.
But if you're near me, Herts area, theres a good place in Baldock.Talk to Fred at A & R Pound 01462892704. You'll need to remove the seat & leave it with them for a day.
£30 or so will do the job.

I went into the local (large) VW dealer today to look at a VW golf. The receptionist was very keen to find out whether it was a private or company buy, and as soon as she heard it was company, they wouldn't serve me. I hadn't even asked for them but I was told there would be no test drive and no brochure. I could look at the car in the showroom (!). Simply because my company use Godfrey Davis and 'GD don't buy from us'.
VW have only just come onto my company car list after (I understand) quite a bit of lobbying from VW. If all the other dealers are like this, they need not have bothered. Read more
One for the manufacturers!
I rang up Honda UK and asked where my nearest dealer was as I was interested in an extended test drive.
I was asked what extended was and I said a weekend, I was changing my company car and had narrowed it down to an Accord or a 320d.
I was asked for my details and my leasing company details and left it at that.
Honda called back the next week and arranged an Accord for a week, they delivered to my door this morning and so far very impressed.
BMW didn't return the call - guess who's getting the business?

Legally speaking the rental companies can NOT refuse to accept your insurance, but I was warned in the insurance paperwork that some try to weasle out of it. Obviously since yours is standard insurance they're not as geared up for it, but the rental insurance I bought supplied me with a number - if the rental company kicked up a fuss I was to ring this and they would be put straight.
I would recommend ringing your insurance company and telling them of this problem, get a contact number that you can make the rental company ring to confirm the cover.
Here's what was written in my paperwork:
Do I have to accept their (the rental company)insurance?
It is against the law for the rental company to force you to purchase their insurance cover. The assistance company... is on hand to speak with the rental company if this should become an issue. We will report any rental company not following this procedure to the regulators.
Perhaps you should threaten the same.
