The Battery Blether
"If the punter complains of slow starting, that's your cue to flog him a new battery. Persuade him that a' maintenance free battery' cannot be topped up or re-charged and definitely don't mention the battery plate reconditioner that can be purchased from the banner ad on the homepage of www.mysterymotors.com"
This first appeared in the telegraph 16 Sept 2001. It can be found at the link below as the mystery motors site is no more. www.pure.gg/cnb/shop/pureresearch?listPos=&op=cata...1
I provide this this interesting chemical for classic car users. But it works with any infrequently used vehicle.
Or contact me for more details.

I\'m about to take delivery of my new Mondeo ST220 and wondered if it will require a \"run in\" period or are modern cars already \"run in\"?

Hi, my Vauxhall Cavalier 1.7TD has developed an annoying 'clicking' noise, seemingly from behind the dash on the drivers side. I have tried taking the panel off above the pedals and checking for any looseness, and checking the bulkhead from the engine compartment - everything seems to be alright. The noise does not seem to correspond to suspension or steering movement, its more of a tapping noise than a knocking, steering/suspension type noise. Has anyone else experienced this - it seems to be getting worse and the radio is having to be turned up slightly more as each day passes!

i had this ticking noise and it turned out to be the speedo cable
The car starts fine in the morning but after a minute or two the revs die away and it cuts out, starts again fine but again after a couple of minutes it dies again. Its only when theres a bit of heat in the engine that it runs ok.
Its only been this over the last week.
Could it have something to do with the inlet manifold preheater relay in the ECU.
oh it a 1992 polo single-point injection.
Any ideas?? Read more
Yeah replaced it almost straight away. Got the heat shield and attached it to the exhaust manifold and run the pipe to the warm air intake. the pipe is fine no holes.

I have to agree with Mark. You've agreed a price which both parties were happy with and signed. Why should they go lower just because you've found out that they would have been willing to sell for less?
As he says, if a week later you'd found out that they'd advertised it elsewhere for more, would you nip into their garage and offer them the difference?
For that matter, if they somehow found out that while you'd haggled them to this figure, the maximum you'd been prepared to pay was £100 more, would they be within their rights to charge you that extra?
You were happy with the price when you agreed to it, why not now?
Of course, all of this isn't to say you shouldn't try to get them to drop the price, it's always worth a try, but they have no legal or moral obligation to do so.
My 1994 Nissan Primera has developed an extremely annoying squeak. It is apparent between the speeds of 20 - 40 miles per hour and appears to be coming from the wheels on the nearside. The Car has done 80K miles.I have been coping by turning the volume of the radio up however this is not always convenient. Does anyone have any ideas as to the cause and how I may rectify the problem without having to pay a garage?
Many Thanks, Jez Read more
Thanks Cliff and PPaul for your suggestions.
The squeak has gone.
I haven't done anything to the Car and am confident it will return!
Has anyone had any experiences - good or bad - with Norgar? I have my 968 booked in for a service on a recommendation and just want to try to double check.

It\'s offical the Mondewoe is going.
But what do I have instead?
It has to be Japanese, I think?, its going to be second hand and cost less that £4K, so what do I go for? It must be large enough for the family holiday with 3 boys, the oldest being 13 (soon) and the youngest 9 (soon). I want a bit of performance, but also it must be economical, it can be diesel but must have no turbo lag. I would prefer a car of the same size as the Mondewoe, preferably an estate, but as SHMBO says I can always winch the trailer down from the garage roof and have a saloon or hatch back. I am not going to be brand negative, but it won\'t be French or a BMW. OR A FORD.
I am looking in the morning so send your advice soon please.
Waiting with anticipation,

Hugo I did look at the Octavia but couldnt get a price to match the Primera, see other thread.

Hi all,
I have a Landrover Discovery TD5 series II, 1999 V reg, 42000 miles on clock and I have had a big problem with the oil pump bolt inside the sump.
The bolt comes loose, sprocket falls off, oil pump stops ending with a dead engine. Landrover feel this is nothing to do with them and that I need to purchase a new engine at a cost of £5500.
I have done some research and now know of other cases where people who have a TD5 have had to replace the engine or part of the engine.
If anyone knows of anybody who has had this problem or can give me any information regarding this please let me know either on this forum or by e-mailing me at TD5oilpump@hotmail.com
Many thanks

I've got a mate whos looking for a focus zetec 3 door at the auctions for me, but he has only seen one since January, I'm looking at a w or x reg - were not too many of these produced?
There seems to be a fair few on the roads and even autotrader but not too many in the auctions.
Does anyone have any answers or do you think hes not looking too hard? Read more
I found the "sports" seats in the Zetec somewhat uncomfortable, so unless you specifically want 3 doors I would go for the Ghia.

L'escargot by name, but not by nature.

Take it easy over first 500 miles or so, dont rev hard though better to let it rev a bit in a low gear than to labour in a high gear, the latter is the worst thing for a new engine. Then slowly let it stretch it's legs for another 1000 miles or so after which all should be fine.
Re oil change, two schools of thought: 1/Change after 500 to 1000 miles to remove initial running in deposits. 2/ Leave original oil in for at least 5000 miles or so to help bedding in. I guess take Ford dealers advice, where as Ford are worried about fleet service costs so will not recomend an oilchange until I guess 12.5k, the dealer will happily charge you for an extra change though should not do so if they think it is completely unnecessary, i.e. they should be fairly objective.
Otherwise oil change every 6 months whatever the mileage.
