thanks HJ hadn't seen your article previously.

Looks the same to me too. I have cutaway diagrams of the VW box and Merc's 7 speed auto box if anyone is interested. Latter is a torque converter jobbie though.

Rumour is that 9 different manufacturers might be coming out with dual clutch transmissions, including a 7 speeder for Bugatti.

I have no fan heater working which also means no AC either. I have checked the switch control and seems to be ok. According to the Haynes manual I can gain access to the motor through the bulkhead after removing the windscreen wipers etc but I cannot see how anybody with any ideas or anyone ever had the same problem. I would appreciate any help Thanks!

Does the fan heater motor only work on the highest speed, or not at all? If the former, then it's the resistor pack that's gone. On the Cavalier it's situated near the motor, but not sure if in the same place on the Carlton. Easily replaced if it has gone.

I just turned 40 and I want to get hold of a, maybe, early to mid 90's 911. For under £20k. I know zip about Porsches. I am going to join the owners' club but am I looking at the quickest way to bankruptcy here, or is there actually a way to enjoy owning this sort of motor?

Anyone care to explain: what is the point of buying all this "performance" when by 2007, it seems, our cars will be automatically monitored for any transgressing of the law?

hi

whats a fair price to pay for a new clutch and clutch cable. It won't be re-conditioned ala Mr Clutch.

Cheers

I had a clutch and flywheel changed on a 95N 214 SEi mk2 by a Rover main dealer under warranty. I asked how much they would charge. I got told about £700.>> Ouch, I just got charged £300.

I've bought my last 3 cars at Manheims auctions in Colchester, the last one a week ago, and each time I've got a bargain, usually saving about £1000 on the retail price. I love the buzz of the auction ( I'm also a long-term attendee of antique auction) and have always enjoyed buying and selling. I was amazed last week at the low prices some cars, especially Corsas and Astras. were fetching . I reckon if I bought 10 cars a year I'd make about 10K turnover. Thats a day per car in terms of auction attendence and preping the car for sale. There may be days when I can't buy a suitable car so lets add on another 5 days for extra auction attendence. Lets also say I may buy the odd one that needs fixing in some way, so I add £1k for expenses and another 1K for adverts and unforeseen costs. This means for 15 days work and possible outlay of 2K I make about £8000.
This seems quite a tidy profit doing something I enjoy doing- a sort of working hobby. There has to be a catch, would someone like to point it out for me? Read more

Didnt some bloke make a fortune selling a book about buying and selling cars for profit?

A few days ago I had reason to change the Head Gasket on a 120k Mile Cavalier Cd Auto 2Li. This cured the water usage and returned the cars performance. Unfortunately-- 'my fault, finger trouble'-- I adjusted the Idle Mixture screw and in doing so have lost its original setting. Is there any simplistic way of getting this adjustment approximately right with out the need for an Exhaust Gas analyser. For instance if one places the slider on the potentiometer about Midway along its resistance, would that do?
Or is there some other way of setting this device?
My concern is that occasionally the Engine Management Light comes on, it does not flash and the 'Paper Clip test Method' shows all '12's and no fault. The advice of an expert would be much appreciated. One other observation, the adjustmet seems to make little difference, it certainly does not affect performance!

I couldn't agree more! I love my Cavalier but its ride quality, even when brand new and especially now its getting on a bit must be one of the weakest features.

THe Growler

What is it with you Poms, as my Australian cousin living in London says? Every August Bank Holiday since time immemorial countless Brits and their families sit sweltering (or in the rain) in endless queues of traffic try to get to somewhere which will be full of people just like them when they get there. They will be miserable, squalling kids, over-priced "services", rickety caravans wobbling along holding them up if they ever do get moving. Tabloid headlines will shriek "HOLIDAY TRAFFIC HELL TRAPS MILLIONS!" or some variation on the few words it is possible to get into 3" headlines on the Daily Wail, all of which must have been repeated in some form or another "n" times since the fiery summer of 1949 when we were already picking blackberries on my birthday in mid-August. Yet every year they all do it, they all know they're going to be miserable and yet, gritting those British teeth, they do it all over again, like voting New Labour back in, and totter back to work on Tuesday more dead than alive so they can exchange "how was it for you on the A272" stories on Tuesday.

It was ever thus, like some sort of grim tribal ritual, some lemming-like compulsion to conform and is nothing new. The French are even worse, except they do it for a month.

By contrast Father would absolutely refuse to go anywhere by car on a Bank Holiday. "I spend most of my week in the damn City being bally miserable because I have to", he would pronounce, "But I'm damned if I'm going to miserable for the fun of it". And so it was, if the weather was fine, we kids would be led on long country walks with picnic baskets, or else played games and squabbled while Mother read the paper and Dad dozed off at the local cricket match. If the heavens opened for the weekend, as they often did, it was games of charades or Monopoly indoors, Dad's corny jokes and conjuring tricks we'd all seen before but which we all laughed at anyway, Mother scolding us if we showed up without hands duly washed ready for trifle and blancmange for tea.

How much more sensible, I always thought.

The one piece of good news as far as I am concerned is that few people read a map or plot a back up route.
I do the driving and my wife does the navigating as she does all over the world.
We take good maps.
Preview alternative routes before starting off.
Are prepared to take a little longer.
Enjoy the view instead of a rear bumper.
The main rules while on a diversion are simple. Give me clear instructions early. I will feedback any features along the way. If we take a wrong turn then either we turn round or we may go two sides round a triangle but no one blames the other.

Unfortunately we just had to undertake some urgent travel over the weekend and we saw some beautiful countryside avoiding many miles of A road and M way queues.
We are lucky to be able to do this.
I understand from my children that Geography at school isnt like it was for you Dad. It isnt about reading maps. So this bit is good news for the future. Good old OS maps.

Took advantage of the wet weather in N Wales. It has been dry up here for some time and the rain I experienced had been the first for some time. Disengaged the "nanny" software systems on the BM and consequently had some "unique moments" on some of the quieter
roads up here. No need to become a victim of Mr B's speed cameras to have some fun - Joy. Read more
