I just turned 40 and I want to get hold of a, maybe, early to mid 90's 911. For under £20k. I know zip about Porsches. I am going to join the owners' club but am I looking at the quickest way to bankruptcy here, or is there actually a way to enjoy owning this sort of motor?

Well first of all go to forums.pelicanparts.com for the biggest 911 community on the web.

You can certainly get a good early 964 ('89 to '94) for £20k. These cars had a litany of problems, but most should have now been sorted out. Some 964s are available very cheaply, but they will be dogs with lots of oil leaks etc. If you find one you like get it inspected before you buy by a mechanic who regularly works on 964s. This will cost you a fair amount but will be well worth it considering what you could spend on a duffer.

Basically you need to read as much as you can about 964s before you buy one. There was a buyers guide in last months GT Purely Porsche magazine if you can hunt that down.

Never been in one let alone drive one but I empathise with your predicament. I have read lots of articles over the years aimed at a person in your situation.
1.You get much more for your money if you buy LHD
2.Take lots of time, look at loads
3. Get any car you consider buying looked at by someone who knows what they are doing.

Let us know what you decide, good luck!

Never owned one, but as with all these specialist motors, a GOOD independent dealer, would be well worth finding.

If you go the private seller, check out what he's buying next. If it's another of the same, but newer/better model, maybee he's not got fed up with lots nasty bills & the car is OK.

Buy right & you'll be £$£$£ in pocket. A few years back, our own car was a Jaguar Sovereign, bought at auction for £10,000, a bit behind trade price for a 1990 car, then. The same month, our MoT man bought a 911 93/94 L plate, for same figure, give or take.
We both ran them for 6 years, similar running during the time we owned them.Upon selling,We got £3000 for the Jaguar,he got £8500.

Personally, I'd still rather ride in the Jaguar & consider that to have been good value motoring.

I'm definitely going to get LHD, it doesn't bother me, I just have the recurring nightmare of repairs to parts I never knew existed costing more than I earn in a month. I'll just have to have a mega inspection done 1st.

I've been trying to decide on the right "image" car (call me shallow) with real speed. Impreza and Evo are too thuggish and baseball cap. Other far east and Japs are too samey. Germans too company car-ish. What does it leave me?

The link to the "pelican" site is great, thanks

Check out insurance before you buy (LHD likely to cost more) - also I have driven LHD 911 in the UK; they are low and visibility is quite restricted so overtaking can be a bit of a gamble. Try before you buy.
Repairs can be *stunningly expensive*, you really need to budget carefully before you buy because if you neglect the car it will soon let you know!

There's a dealer in Ipswich area called, I think, PG Martini who deals in LHD only and often has 911s in his ads. Could try and find his number if it's any use. Local paper ran an article on buying used 911 and definitely advised agains buying privately, best from an independent specialist.

TVR, Morgan, Lotus Elise? More character than any of the above, albeit a greater likelihood that you'll face those repair & maintenance costs than with the above options. Wouldn't have thought that the Porsche would be as trouble-free as the Scooby/Evo.

Anyone care to explain: what is the point of buying all this "performance" when by 2007, it seems, our cars will be automatically monitored for any transgressing of the law?
