Bought a car battery from a well known fast fit company just under 3 years ago. One month left on the guarantee. Battery struggled this morning. Got a jump start and took the car to get the battery checked.
Keen to make his first fifty quid of the day, the manager comes out, conversation as follows :

"How can I help you sir ?"
"I think I need a new battery - could you do a quick check for me ?"
"Certainly sir, just drive it in the middle bay and we'll get that checked for you"

Enter the technician : battery check carried out.

"Your battery is finished - you really need a new one" (NEVER !)

"I was hoping you would say that - here's the guarantee, there's a month left on it"

Some years ago I returned a battery to a Ford main dealer after 2 years and 360 days! After "testing" it and then claiming it was perfectly OK, when challenged that the test wasn't realistic as the returned battery wouldn't start the car, they then proceeded to give me a brand new battery from the display piled up in their spares shop.

It's true that I only got the remaining week as a warranty but who's worried.

That same battery is still going strong in my brothers Sierra four years later!

Question Two things...

You get over one problem but there's always another... Does anyone know why I might be getting vibration and wobble through my steering wheel that's got nothing to do with wheel balance? Peugeot 205 XLD by the way. Also I've noticed the steering wheel is slightly turned to the right when driving in a straight line... could this be related to the wobble or do I have two different problems...? It vibrates when going fast, ie bewtween 50 and 70, but wobbles at a much slower pace when driving at aropund 20-30, if you let go of the wheel it just rotates back and forth about 1-2cms each way. I'm planning to sell the damn thing after it's MOT next month but no-one's going to buy a car off me if I say 'it runs fine but there's this one thing...' and I'm not lying to anybody! While I'm at it, what car would anybody advise someone to buy if they had £800-£1100 to spend, were after a small or smallish car (mini-escort) which will have good fuel economy, low tax and insurance and is also likely to be as reliable as possible because they are a poor student who will be spending their every last penny on buying it in the first place (i.e. ME!)...? Can't see how that effects the Ackerman principle.

If the toe is correct and the wheels point in a straight line then it doesnt matter where the wheel is, for purposes of this principle.

It is however damn anoying.

Well I need an estate car (large) and i have a couple of options.

I've got abot 5,000 to spend. What I would like is a Toyota Camry p reg or so 3.0 liter all options. BUT I can't find any at that price. I found a N reg for 5,500 seems alot for a car thats 7 years old.

Now what I have found is a Daewood Nubira estate 2.0 liter all the mod cons and a price of 5,000 on a 2001 plate (51).

What I'm thinking here is should i get the newish daewoo or not.

I'm a little hessitant thinking that it might not be that great a car. Has anyone got one or had the pleasure of driving one and telling me what their like?

Thanks Read more

3 litres IS a big car nowadays. You'll get hit with high fuel costs not to mention top rate road tax.

Of the 2 you mention, I'd go for the Nubira but personally would go for a Rover 4 series or similar. £5500 sound expensive for a P reg 3 litre car to me. I only got £7000 for an R (98) MR2 in excellent nick!

Hello,

I have a friend who has a reasonably new 1.8 Vectra (around 3 years old) - it has developed an intermittent fault with the idle speed. Periodically whilst idling the engine will start to rev itself from normal idle speed to somewhere between 1,500 and 2,000 rpm, exactly as though the driver was pumping the accelerator peddle. No engine management warning light is shown, so presumably no fault codes are logged.

Any ideas?

I was thinking somewhere along the lines of crankshaft sensor... but I'd appreciate some advice.

Kind regards,
Cyrill666

As John S says, doing a search of this site should bring up detailed help on how to clean the ISCV.

I also seem to recall that the cavweb.com (cavalier, vectra owners forum) site has this topic well covered.

I have a friend with a similar symptoms on a Cavalier 1.6L and I will post its own new thread.

See above!

I really should not tempt fate like that! I now have a Mondeo with a wet boot carpet near the offside light, and a fun Saturday planned to find and rectify the problem.

I'm surprised this issue does not yet warrant a mention in the cbcb.

Have others found the problem to be the seal between light unit and bodywork, or within the light unit?
Any success getting Ford to fix the problem on a 3-4 year old car?

Thanks all
Andy

Mine doesn't do it either.

Suppose it will now I've said that.

Ford Galaxy 98 2litre ghia
Jumps out of 3rd gear usually only when turning right on islands etc.
Ford dealer tightened gear linkage and when I told them that it did not work, they said that they would have to take the gearbox off at a cost of £450 and then look at the problem!!
Surely it must be connected to turning right?

Any ideas

Dave, are you able to go to another Ford garage? I had a problem with my BMW, the main dealer had my car for three days mounting costs, at which point I told them to remove all the items they had replaced, put the originals back and then took it to another main dealer. This second main dealer looked at my car and found the cause in about 30 minutes.

Dear all,

Does anyone know which type of super 4 plugs a 95 Nissan QX 3.0 V6 take? It is not listed in Halfords.

Or, does anyone have the Bosch customer helpline number?

Thanks,

Having just left the VW dealership £230 lighter in the pocket. I feel that I need to vent my spleen somewhere.

I am annoyed that a headlamp can be smashed completely by a stone on the motorway, it has never happened to me in any other car. I have read reports that this is not uncommon on the golf. Is there a design fault?

Then i get a bill for £116 for the headlamp and £78 labour plus the VAT.

I questioned the garage, who told me that they had to remove the bumper to fit the new light. I was then told to invest in headlamp protectors. I don't need these for any other car, why do I need these for the golf?

Does anybody have any similar experiences, should I take this up with VW customer service or am I just wasting my time.

Cheers

Matt

In the space of a year I had a fog light and two windscreens smashed by flying stones due to a design fault by Surrey Highways. The stretch of dual carriageway about half a mile either way off J11 of the M25 (Chertsey/Woking) had a central reservation which was simply filled with large stones as a soakaway. Lazy HGV's and other drivers simply U-turned over it at night or when the road was chocker with traffic dragging stones onto the carriageway.

Last year the council fitted barriers along the central reservation, in my opinion, admitting some responsibility. I submitted a claim to the council complete with bills, dates and photographs only to have them deny responsibility.

Currently have a MK3 Golf, so thank goodness SCC have now cleared up their mess and reduced the risk of me breaking more glass.

Purchased 1 month ago Passat PD115 SE estate - tiptronic box at £8½K with 80K on clock + VW FSH. Used for commuting 300-400 miles/week - simply fantastic so far. Diesel lump really suits tiptronic car. If I need a burst of power simply go to manual side of gearbox - useful for crossing busy roundabouts at rush hour. Economy very good - about 45mpg without trying too hard
