Friends, the front dipped h/lights on my 98 416 are not working..
All other lights ARE working , I assume from the manual one fuse covers h/lights and one sides. So maybe it isn't the fuse...
Any ideas?

Hello,

a friend's daughter is afraid that she will never be a safe driver because she has failed her first driving test.

I'm sure I read somewhere that people who pass their test second time around have a lower subsequent accident rate than those who pass first time - does anyone know whether this is (or ever was) true ? I've had a pretty thorough trawl about online but haven't turned-up any accident stats set against number of driving tests taken.

I'd really appreciate any help anyone can give on this as it might help to restore her confidence.

Thanks Read more

I'll let you know how good my driving is now, in 5 years' time when I can look back on it!!! Xo)

Whenever I watch a tv programme that features a camera inside the car, Deals on Wheels, etc, 90% of the drivers involved seem to spend most of their time with their left hand resting on the gear lever. Apart from the loss of steering control should an emergency arise, it is just plain uncomfortable.

I've never understood why people do this, but anytime I give tuition to an experienced driver for whatever reason, it will invariably be the first fault I pick up on. The second will often be steering from the inside of the wheelrim, which is uncomfortable and limits the range of turn considerably. Let alone what will happen to their arm should the airbag go off.

Any Backroomers practise either of the above, and why? Read more

"90% of the drivers involved seem to spend most of their time with their left hand resting on the gear lever"

Not to mention the fact that they frequently turn to address the camera instead of, perhaps, watching the road............

Never fails to amaze me just how many drivers can't hold a conversation without turning to look at their companion. Scary stuff!!

Anyone out there with knowlege of Bosch Lambda's please?

LSH6 is three wire, LSH15 is four wire. Externally, the sensor units appear identical.

Question. Is it simply that the LSH15 has the fourth (earth) wire and that the units themselves ( internals, values etc ) are the same ?

Any input/confirmation will be much appreciated.
Thank you, Pete. petel@clara.co.uk Read more

Still hoping that someone out there can answer the original question. Anyone please?

I have a 1991 Peugeot 205 DTurbo that exhibits the following: On starting the car after a prolonged stop the battery charge light stays on. When the slightest amount of revs are applied the light goes off and doesn't come back on (and the headlights brighten slightly). Battery charging seems to be fine. Is the voltage regulator just a bit lazy on starting the car, or is the alternator about to pack in? The car has always done this for the 6 months that I've owned it. The mileage is 140K and whether the alternator is original I don't know. Should I live with it or is intervention recommended? Any advice would be appreciated. Read more

the alternator was blamed on my cavalier TD when the airbag warning light wouldn't go out. Vast expense for replacement and all because of a light on the dashboard.

Does anybody out there know whether the Champion Oil Filter C148, for a ford mondeo has a non return valve, sales assistant in motor shop has no idea......this question is a follow up to my recent question about the noisy tappets on my 1.6 zetec engine. Read more

And I had to read my answer twice before I knew what I was on about!!

I agree about length of oilways affecting pressure build-up. Take the Vauxhall slant-four engine of the 1970s. This had a very high oil pump and was notorious for rattling when starting from cold due to oil drainback into the sump. Some of the Triumphs suffered oil drainback as well due to having a horizontal filter without any anti-drainback valve -- my T2500 would rattle for about two seconds on start-up.

These Vauxhall and Triumph engines, and others that also rattled on start-up, never seemed to come to harm though, even using plain old mineral oil. However, at about 180,000 miles I converted my T2500 to spin-on filter to overcome the irritating rattle. I selected a filter having a non-return valve although the filter angle of about 15 degrees from vertically down probably makes this superfluous.

I have a Renault 21 Turbo, phase 1 modle reg is 1988. I paid not much for it and have had a new head gasket fitted. It has a BBR conversion on a button to 240bhp. std 175. This was done in 1993. It goes sweetly and the turbo is strong - save for when I really put my foot down in 3rd, 4th or 5th. The boost comes on strongly as usual, but then, it kinda "cuts out" intermitantly, almost slowing the car. Its like I have switched off the ignition and switched it back on again. If you like, a bad misfire but worse. Some may call it "choking". It is sevre. I have to take my foot off the gas a bit to allow it to clear. Gentle application of throttle is ok. It happens on std boost or otherwise. High boost makes it worse. Part throttle with full boost is fine and pre boost there is not a problem. When the head was done, the hoses were checked and they are ok. I have new plugs, rota arm and cap and the leads seem to be newish and do not outwardly show signs of trouble. I may replace these and see but I feel that I am not getting to the root of the problem. There is no oil leak nto the distrib either which these cars can do. So I am confused. Can you help? It is a 1995cc engine [f inj] with a garrett t3 turbo. Is it fuel or electrics. Any help greatly appreciated!!

Could you bypass the ECU solenoid for controlling the wastegate to a manual bleed. ECU can do funny things if it thinks its stopping you blowing yourself up.

I've just got back from taking a parcel to Scotland. Belting up the M6 in the dark and the rain at 1.50am this morning I came up to the contraflow over the Thelwall viaduct, and dropped down to about 70mph as I entered the 40 zone. (Don't pick on me for that please, read the rest first!) Now being a southerner we only have gatsos and truvelos in my neck of the woods, so when I saw the first SPECS camera on an overhead gantry it took a couple of seconds to sink in. (I know it was a SPECS, it had a red reflective board behind it and looked exactly like the ones in Nottingham.)
I slowed down to about 30mph to drop my average before reaching the next camera, which impressed all the lorry drivers sitting at 56mph so much so that a couple of them even hooted as they went past me! :-) A little burst of 25mph for about 200yds up to the camera should have done it, thought I, then back up to 40mph(ish) for the rest of the restricted zone.
Meanwhile, no end of articulated lorries were overtaking me at 56mph, and more worryingly quite a few Transit and Sprinter vans still doing 80, 90 and more, as well as a handful of private motorists all well above 40mph too! Am I missing something, or are these cameras dishing out speeding fines by the wheelbarrowload all day and all night?? I like my clean license, I want it to stay that way. Read more
