Question Merc PX value
Marc

You may have read my recent thread where I asked about the virtues of the Vectra and Pug 406 and I went and picked a Mondeo instead! Well, my next question is this : did I get a fair price for my trade in?

Merc 190E 1.8 manual in signal red 1990 on an H with 121k BUT with a fully stamped up service book, 12 months MOT and all receipts/MOTs from new as well as good Pirellis, recent exhaust and radiator. Believe me also when I tell you the car was absolutely mint inside and out. Price obtained against the Mondeo - £1500

Do the backroomers reckon this a fair price? Read more

Marc,

By the book values you did OK, the dealers are never going to go tops on any 12yr old 100K plus car.

However if your car was really mint and looked good in that strong red I guess you would have done quite well on a private sale.

Just last year I brokered the sale of a near identical car at £3K+.

Any chance of a mini-comparison road test on this trade up from a well regarded old quality car to a family motor? Ride, performance, handling, practicality etc. If you had a few minutes it would make an interesting new thread.

Can anyone advise please? Am I right in assuming that all the current range of diesel engined passenger cars, due to the absence of manifold depression, are fitted with a seperate vacuum pump for servo assistance to the braking system ? Could anyone guide me on the siting of the vacuum pump,on a mid nineties Rover Metro diesel ? Is there a seperate vacuum pump and, is it driven off the timing belt ?
Any guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks Read more

It's a reliable little vacuum pump, too

Unlike some others.......

Question Mondeo Mirror
jms

The electric mirror on the driver`s side has stopped tilting up or down, although the motor is still making the normal noise. It is moving from side to side with no probs. I had a Cavalier, where the glass became detached from the motor and needed a good push to re-attach it. Could it be the same kind of problem? Read more

Done that! Problem is, when does a good push becom a cracked mirror? Defnitely seems like it is just a case of the glass having come away, but are there any tips to get it back, without breaking it? >> >>

Replaced left hand driveshaft recently on my 309; got the refund through aswell (I posted about this asking if I had a chance of any money back as I bought from a trader.)
However I\'m unsusre about the right hand side. The car makes a clunking noise as I pull away, especially if I move quickly, and under full throttle at say 85-90 it shakes, could this be the lefdt hand side?
Thanks Read more

Hi Dave - Your "quiet screeching" noise could be the intermediate bearing on the righthand driveshaft.

anyone ever heard of this motor being de-badged or do you think it has had a ding, been sprayed up but with no badges.
cheers

Cars often dont have badges for several reasons, and it doesnt necessarly mean they have been re sprayed.

One reason is that people dont want others to know what model it is they are driving, happens a lot with bmw's, when people dont want other people to know their 3 series is just a bog standard 318. I actually remember hearing that BMW charge for debadgeing, but dont know if this is true, anyone know?

Another reason is that badges can just fall off. Especially the little LX etc badges on the 406, by the front doors, often just come off. If its the larger badges on the back of the car, that does sound a bit dodgy, but check it out before you jump to conclusions.
