Am thinking about buying a S/H BMW 523i. It was imported from Holland, 97R, one (known) company owner, FBMWSH, ~35K, leather, no crunches, and I believe it's a clean car.
1) What would be a fair value for it (does anyone know a good site for imported s/h values?) - Asking £10.5K, and
2) should I steer clear because of the premature engine wear problem? Any thoughts gratefully received. Read more
Dilema!
What is the true answer as to whether it is more economical to have a company car or run & buy/contract hire your own vehicle?
I will do in excess of 40k miles, will pay some higher rate tax, would get a Mondeo Ghia or a car allowance plus 11p per mile.
With new Benefit in Kind, emissions rules etc is there any definitive answer which way are you better off????? Read more
Hi
Saw your message on the Honest John web site. Wondered if you new anything about water ingress in a '94 Xantia. I am 99% certain that the water found under my back seats is coming from the sun roof. I believe there has been a modification and wondered if it was a DIY job.
Thanks

Recenty I have been ringing around for a quote for my daughter who is buying her first car. Had what appeared to be a reasonable quote from a large firm for a policy "designed for those without a NCB". Wasn't such good value when I discovered that it was a policy for only 10 months. At the end of this period you get '1 years' NCB; and thus build up your NCB quicker was the justification.
Another broker offered a 1 years NCB as she had been driving on my policy.
Does anyone know if there are Insurance industry rules/guidelines on the granting of NCB? Stretching the argument above, could a firm insure you for say 3 months and give you a years NCB at the end of each period? Or a 3 year introductory NCB? Read more
Another ploy is the loading applied if you have to cancel your policy early for any reason, having paid an annual premium.
You can easily land up paying nine months premium for four months cover.
For that reason it is often better to pay monthly rather than annually in advance, so if you cancel the policy you tell them to whistle for the balance.
I have noticed recently, especially in Shrops & Staffs, that many road signs are covered by overgrowing trees or shrubs. Not a problem if you know where you are going but if you are a stranger it can become a problem. Safety is compromised in cases such as these and is indicative of the declining amounts of money available to County Councils to maintain our roads etc. Read more
Andy I have to agree,
I live in the Peoples Republic of Halton, Lord knows where the money goes the roads round here are in a dreadful state.
Perhaps the annual "traditional" Mayors' party for the Mayor of Halton and his family and hangers on takes what is left, or maybe the local committees consume it all in expenses.

I bought a car to replace my written off one and have got hold of a 97 R Rover 623GSi Auto with lots of extras, 1 owner, 60K miles, full Rover SH for 5G's. Nice alloys as well. It only costs me an extra fiver a month on my insurance!
Thing is, I've never had a car with leather seats before but I know it's important to look after them. What's the best 'food' for them and how often should you nourish them? I know there was a thread somewhere but I can't find it.
Could anyone refresh my sieve-like memory? Read more
Connolly Hide Food was still available a couple of years back - I bought some from Kehoe Brothers Shoe Repairs of Borough High Street London. You need to go to an old style cobblers or specialist luggage shop to buy it I would think.
I got it to protect a lovely leather satchel type bag I bought my wife to use for work. Obviously she never uses the stuff on the bag but I put it on my Timberland boots at the start of the winter & it does a good job.
I'm loooking to buy 1988-1991 Honda CRX to do about 12000 miles a year for the next three years. My budget is around £2000, are there any other cars that people could suggest that are well made, reliable and are not too sluggish. Does anyone know where I can get detailed info on the Honda?
