Wasnt there an article about car prices in Bali in the Telegraph a few years ago along with petrol at about 4p a litre. I seem to recall a very large Japanese 4*4 selling for about 3.5K brand new. Or did I dream it?

A JX 4U was a Limited Edition based on the 1.6JX Sport introduced in August 1998 and running through to June 1999. Has a reduced power 79bhp engine, alloy wheels, 4U graphics and an easy fold down top. The JLX had 95bhp up to end of production in July 1998. From Glass's Guide Checkbook.

I currently and doing about 500 miles a week of motorway driving in a Fiesta Zetec 1.25, and have attempted to be meticulous with the cars servicing. As a result, I was taking the car to Reg Vardy (Rapid Fit) in Reading, on average every four or so months for the correct interval servicing.

On top of their appaulling customer care, every single service (10,000 mile intervals) the pollen filter was being replaced, the spark plugs were replaced at 30,000.

The other Ford dealer in my area, Gowrings, has an equally dubious reputation, gained over many years of lacklustre service. (Known even before I owned a Ford!)

Determined to begin to take control of some of these servicing costs, I bought a Haines Manual, (for the 1997 Model Year) and am determined to start with simple oil changes at 5000 mile intervals. However, upon reading the Haines manual, and the Ford Service guide, it states that spark plugs only need be changed at 100,000 miles, and the Pollen Filter at 20,000.

What is your recommendation?

On the question of the timing belt on the Zetec 1.25, what would be the right interval for a change?

All the best

The pollen filter on our Xantia gets so caked up it reduces the airflow noticeable when it is coming up for replacement. This also seems to make the A/C not run as cool, presumably because of the reduced flow - shows it is actually doing something useful.

Has anyone out there used a cycle rack/carrier on a LWB Shgun? If so, which one and where is it mounted? Read more

Hello all
I have a 1990 Golf GTI - 127,000 miles. Yesterday while going round a roundabout the oil pressure warning light & buzzer came on and then went off once I was back on the straight. It was only 1/4 mile home so I got home & left the car to cool down. This morning upon investigation there's virtually no oil in the sump & a thick whitish substance in the coolant reservoir.
The head gasket has gone hasn't it ? It's going to cost me a lot to put right isn't it ?

Any ideas ?

Thanks Read more

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up Ltd.)

Before condemning the cylinder head check the oil cooler arrangement where the oil filter goes. The coolant water circulates around the top of the oil filter housing and they regularly rust out mixing oil and coolant.
Good luck!!

Readers may be interested to know that if you go to N Ireland you can take advantage of the lower prices here. It might be necessary first to register the car locally (using a relative's address perhaps) but it's no problem then to re-register it when you get it home. For example when I asked a dealer here for a no-nonsense no trade-in price for a Zafira diesel Elegance (list £17240) he could quote me £14700 (good through end Sept). Since I have enough GM card points this makes him competitive versus an import. Whether I should reward GM after suffering a Vectra for 5 years (serial cambelt roller failures) is another matter. What about the way that some US cars have the main beam turned on
whenever you've got the headlights turned off (seen on an Alero). - bleedin' stupid if you ask me!

Having said that the NJ law which states "Wipers on, lights on" is a pretty
good idea...

Anyone had any good or bad experience with the Nissan Customer Care Dept? I had a starting problem with my 96N Micra 1.0S (bought secound-hand from a main dealer in mid 1998), which I found out (from said dealer) was due to a faulty temperature sensor telling the engine to inject too much fuel.

I asked HJ for advise and contacted the Customer Care Dept, who said it was a problem that affected chassis numbers including mine. I was suprised and pleased that they said the faulty unit would be replaced at my convenience at Nissan UK's expense! Since then I have noticed a 5% increase in fuel efficiency - a good result all round!

On the other side of the coin - my dad's 96P Ford Fiesta has had over £400 worth of suspension repair carried out recently, on a car which has done less than half the milage than mine! I know what manufacturer I won't be looking at when I replace my car! Read more

I had a Primera that would occassionally jump out of top gear. I took it to the supplying dealer within a few days of it reaching 3 years old. The dealer checked with Nissan Customer Care and the car was sorted. I was delighted and impressed.
