August 2001
I am about to change my car, I am self employed and drive over 30 000 miles per year, I currently have a P registered Golf 1,8 auto which I dislike driving, however I am tempted by a T registered Golf 1,6 SE I have seen offered for sale in the VW dealer at £ 11,000, Because of all the mileage I do I don't intend to keep this for more than a couple of years at the very most, and I intend hope to avoid the initial depreciation of buying new by buying "nearly new"
I have generally been pleased with VWs but I realise that for the money I am about to fork out I could get into a Luxury car such as an Audi A4 BMW 3 series or a C class Merc.
I have been offered £4500 for my golf with 68 000 on the clock, by the VW dealer.
Should I go ahead or would I be better off in the long run with a slightly older but more prestigious car ? I dont want another auto either.
Hope you can help me decide

Micheldever have been mentioned a few times in this forum.
Can anyone tell me who/where they are?
What is so good about them?
Thanks.

Does anyone know if towing using an A Frame where the disabled vehicle steers itself is still legal in the UK? Read more
I was told that if any part of the towed vehicle touched the ground, then it must have an MOT.
I also asked North Wales police to tell me if this was true and they said they did not know.
So according to wha tI hav been told by the trade, if using an A frame or a spectacle lift to pull a car, tehn teh car must have na MOT.
I am still not sure of the law and cannot find the correct answer.
I noticed this morning that the SPECS cameras have been installed over the eastbound carriageway. Not above the westbound one yet.
Thankfully I am off for the next two weeks, just hope I don't forget when I get back.

Does anyone here have any experience of using this system? It apparently has a database of all the locations of speed cameras in the UK, prob does not include mobile ones...
Anyone?

Worth having a look at todays times (on line and paper edition) an article about speeding yet again. It reports now that it is intended to re-spray speed cameras
in dayglo orange to make them easier to to spot. The writer manages to quote the Great Northampton Lie. Have a look. Read more
Some of these things are so well hidden behind other clutter or signs that painting them in any colour you care mention will not make them more visible.
What would happen if we all slowed down, no pictures were taken and no revenue derived. They then become very expensive street furniture, can't see plod wanting to pay for such a thing after all they have their ill health retirement/Stress/trauma claims to support.
as ever

Elsewhere, HJ has said that aircon systems should be run constantly to keep them in good nick. Does anyone know of a website where their effect on fuel consumption can be checked, or have any personal knowledge on the subject? Read more
The car is less prone to bouts of irrational behaviour and is better at responding to instructions!
I didn't get a reply to my last post on this, but I'm an optimist.
Anyone got any evidence of whether cars are cheaper in Glasgow than London? Read more
No hard facts, just an opinion. I reckon cars were more expensive in London when I lived there a couple of years ago.
More buyers with more cash maybe?
Autos go really well in London, but are generally unwanted up here.
You don't really want a car that's been used there anyway. It's a hard life for a car in London.
Dominating front pages of our local paper these days, the Gloucestershire Echo, is the story of how a cyclist was pulled over and `ticked off` by police for travelling at an apparently `dangerous 23mph on a 40mph road. You have to wonder what the world is coming to when police have that much time on their hands that they can stop cyclists for excessive speed. He wasn`t cycling dangerously, he had a helmet, it wasn`t raining - is the crime rate really that low that they have this much time on their hands? Read more
........and we worry about cars travelling at these speeds. At least cars have a chance of stopping if someone steps out in the road (not on the downhill mountain run, but on country roads and in town)
Have now discovered that for 12K motorpoint do brand new golf 1.6SE, So I will sell mine privately and pay them a visit, they also do Beetle & Seat leon for around this price - might consider this also, anyone had a beetle ?
