June 2001
Just arrived home with my latest project, an "out of the weeds" Land Rover Series 2. Actually it had an MOT in the cab to April 2001 but with so many faults they must have been kind to it in April 2000, its only been a few hundred miles since that date.
It had old black and silver plates, A-reg so I guessed 1963/64. The V5 all looks correct but I notice it was first registered Nov' 1960. With a look around I've found an old set of non-dating plates in the tool box (the original no. I guess).
It has been in the local farming area for 10yrs + and all chassis/engine numbers match so nothing dodgy I hope.
My question is that I thought any number change had to give a replacement that was no newer than the date of first registration. What has happened here? If the old number was taken from it say twenty years ago were they more lax? Or is it that they never put an interesting non-dating back on when you change?

I remember some time ago reading that it was not a good idea to use supermarket petrol on a regular basis. Since then I've always stuck to Shell or Esso when possible.
I was telling a friend this but I couldn't remember the detailed basis for it.
Can you remind me?
Thanks

Ian,
I think you got it just right........ However.
My son in law drives a fuel tanker on regular nights delivering fuel to petrol stations for Texaco.
I asked him about this theory of additives being different and his answer was that he knows little about the additives except that they are different for where the fuel is being delivered but that all deliveries contain it.
Apparently when they fill the tank they have the delivery note in their hand and punch in to the loading panel certain numbers which specify the amount and type of additives which is to be added to the fuel.
He knows that the customer specifies the amounts and type of additive and this is all done automatically by the blending machinery over which he has no control. He tells me that up to a few years ago Esso tankers had a separate tank on the vehicle containing the additive and the blending was done by the driver when delivering on site.
He says his main concern when delivering is ensuring that he dosn't put diesel into a petrol tank and vice versa which does happen occassionally with a cost to the fuel company of several thousand pounds for the subsequent pumping out etc of the wrong fuel. Also a black mark is placed against the driver with re-training of the driver and other sanctions.
I always say to him that I am amazed that there has never been a major incident at a station with volatile fuels and the public in the vicinity.
He agrees and tells horror stories of delivering fuel to garages in the Birmingham area late at night and idiots firing air rifles at the tanker whilst it is pumping. And when he had a blow back of petrol on to his overalls soaking him through, going into the kiosk to tell the attendant who full of sympathy pulls his fags out, sticks one in his mouth offers John one and pulls out his lighter. I will not repeat the obscenities which John used to decline the offer.
However I digress and the answer appears to be is that all fuels contain an additive but it can be different according to the garage.

My '94L Pug 306 is long in the tooth and making noises that says it needs a new owner. My question is what to replace it with. I would like something in the 12k bracket that is fun to drive and reasonably reliable. My choices are between 2yo VW golf GTI, Audi A3 1.8T or Alfa 156 2.0T-spark. My wife drives an Audi A4 which can not be faulted (apart from its ability to attrach immobile pedestrian barriers at the local retail park), so the A3 seems a good choice, if overpriced. The VW is essentially the same car for less dosh, but the alfa is far and away the most attractive. What is anyone's experiences of these motors? Read more
I'll swap it for the signed photo of HJ that I accepted in exchange for an old citreon.
What is the best way to wash a car?
I've just invested my hard earned in my first self-financed car which, as you'd expect coming from a main dealer, was very shiny indeed!!
Obviously I want to try and keep it looking like this for as long as I can. Can anybody recommend any rules I should follow or tricks of the trade?
Is there any outstanding products on the market I should use? The shelves at Halfords seem to be full of all sorts of potions!!
I'm fortunate enough to have been given a high-pressure jet washer by my old man. Is this a useful tool to be using?
As the car has alloy wheels any ideas on keeping these in tip-top condition? I am not going anywhere near kerbs when parking!! There seems to be an accumulation of stubborn brake dust appearing on them.
I'd also be interested to hear any recommendations on waxing products (preferably easy to use ie. no effort needed!!).
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.
Cheers

I haven't tried it yet, but I've seen an advert for silicone wiper blades. The blurb says they deposit silicone on the glass and that bugs / water etc doesnt stick!
Has anyone got a view on this?
I have a 760 2.8 V6 with an LH Jetronic injection system. It's an F
plate, in beautiful condition with a totally complete service history.
I have a problem that has developed over a few weeks. It turns
over a lot before it starts, initially when hot, but now also when cold. There are no diagnostics on the engine. Does anyone know how to check the various sensors and valves on this engine, the local main agent can only suggest substituting components, but at £60/HR this will cost a fortune. Read more
Its almost certainly the fuel relay. Remove it and click off the the plastic cover and clean the points. If it has seriously over heated it may have melted the solder in the holder which it plugs into. Carefully resolder it. The 30 amp are better than the 16 amp relays.

This particular problem is under 200 series.
I ordered a Ford Ka Collection in State Blue Metallic from a local Ford dealer. The deal included 12 months insurance, 0% finance, and a CD player for £7325.
The dealers phoned my wife this evening saying that they've failed to locate a Ka in State Blue Metallic but can locate a Ka Collection in Panther Black Metallic and with airconditioning at no extra cost.
However, they want a decision as soon as possible (Wednesday morning). Is there any reason for this?
Is the deal too good?
Is it worth taking them up on it? Read more
I went to the dealership on the strength of a 12 month Ka (W2000) at around £6500 - which didn't include insurance or the three year warranty. I had been looking for second-hand originally - but I couldn't find something suitable. Once insurance, finance, and a warranty were costed in to a second-hand car the new price I paid (over £800 less than list) worked out better.
I certainly didn't expect to go new. However, after driving a selection of Saxos, 106s, Clios, Polos, Lupos, and Arosas, the Ka was the best drive, the most comfortable, and the most cost effective.
I'm thinking of fitting a security tracking device to my car. Looked at Tracker, but there are also a few others on the market with various options. Tracker does not seem to work if the theives get your car abroad for example.

Does anybody know precisely how the official fuel consumption figures are measured?
I have seen references to official measurements taken on a rolling road, but this would not take into account variations in wind resistance between different vehicles. Is the rolling road only used for CO2 measurements?
On the urban cycle, when there is a sequence of accelerations and stops, how is the acceleration determined? Is it done at full throttle irrespective of the vehicle, or is there some clever method of making any vehicle accelerate at a pre-determined rate, regardless of engine power etc. (I think that would require a computer controlled "foot" on the accelerator pedal, calibrated for the particular vehicle under test.)
Also, does anybody have any comparative figures between the old 56MPH/75MPH/Urban figures and the new Urban/Extra-Urban/Combined methods? I am interested in comparing the (theoretical) economy of newer vehicles against older vehicles, where only the old type of measurements are available.

It seems unlikely to me that wind resistance wouldn't be taken into account, as otherwise, we would still be driving cars shaped like bricks; there would be no advantage in reducing a car's coefficient of drag. I know the Cd also affects the level of wind noise, but I can't believe that this has been the sole reason for cars becoming ever more streamlined.
Someone, somewhere must know.
I need a vehicle to tow my caravan and have seen a Volvo V70 turbo diesel 1997 R reg with 130000 miles on. Full Volvo service history, asking price £9995. Good spec. with aircon. Whole vehicle looks good. What are the likely faults at this mileage? Obviously much of the mileage will have been motorway. Is the vehicle overpriced? Should I buy or is it likely to become very expensive very quickly? Any advice/experience would be gratefully received.

Ive been tempted in the past to buy but have been told that.
they are expensive to fix

impossible to sell on.
any views would be appreciated

Actually, I don't have a problem with speed cameras...I believe that one shouldn't really speed as a matter of course PARTICULARLY in built up areas, HOWEVER, my gripe is that 35 MPH is too close to class as an intentional violation of the law.
Does anyone know of anyone who's challenged these "near legal speed" prosecutions / or of an organisation which is assisting in challenging them?

I bet she is - and wait till she gets to grips with the sloppy steering and the lack of syncro on first and second!
Had a SIII for short while, but my wife never took to it, so I see the problem.
