How to test if selectable four-wheel drive is working

"I would like to buy a used Fiat Sedici with its switchable two and four-wheel drive system. Apart from finding a grassy hill to drive up (and assuming there is no snow on the ground) how can I test that the four-wheel drive system is operative (apart from the light on the dash illuminating, which only shows that the bulb is functioning!)."
Accelerating from a muddy verge is probably the easiest option. The wheels will spin in two-wheel drive mode, but the car should make off with minimum fuss if the four-wheel drive is working correctly. The other option is to put it on a ramp in four-wheel drive mode, if it's working correctly spinning a wheel with your hand should cause the opposing wheel to spin in the opposite direction.

All weather tyres - which ones for a Fiat Sedici?

"My Fiat Sedici 4 x 4 is a superb utility vehicle: low motorway usage, country lanes but no off-country. We have two or three weeks snow here in north Derbyshire and whilst the 4 x 4 system works well, I cannot justify the cost of buying snow tyres and rims for winter and "summer" tyres for the rest of the year. Is there a tyre that will give me extra grip in the snow without having to resort to full winter tyre spec please?"
Michelin Cross Climate, Nokian Weatherproof, Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons. Vredestein Quatrac, Bridgestone A001s. All are 'all season' tyres with better capability in cold weather than conventional 'summer tyres'.

Can I have my Fiat Sedici's DPF professionally cleaned?

"Arnold Clark has confirmed its £3300 plus quotation for a new DPF for a Fiat Sedici. Is it cast in gold? What are your thoughts on the DPF being professionally cleaned, such as by the DPF Clean Team, as an alternative to replacement?"
Don’t illegally remove the DPF altogether because this could catch up with you when VOSA starts enforcing the law on this. It’s possible that the existing DPF can be saved by cleaning. Ceramex.com has developed a process for cleaning DPFs for trucks that can restore 95 per cent efficiency. It might work for your car, is available at most Unipart and Alliance autocentres and is now on trial at some KwikFits as well.
