MG GS (2016 – 2019) At A Glance

SUV from MG, chain cam engine, well equipped at an affordable price.

Still question marks over MG quality. MGs no longer assembled in UK.

New prices start from £15,095
Insurance Groups are between 16–17
On average it achieves 83% of the official MPG figure

The GS is MG's first crossover and the Nissan Qashqai-sized car will be joined by a second more compact crossover. Both launched in the UK in 2016.

The MG GS is already on sale in China but was designed and engineered by the SMTC UK Technical Centre at Longbridge.

In its home market, the GS is powered by a 2.0-litre petrol engine with 220PS.

UK market MG GS models initially come with a 166PS/250Nm 1.5 litre petrol engine, no diesel at first.

Priced from £14,995 rising to £20,995 which puts it in Suzuki Vitara territory. DCT auto available.

Best seen as an alternative to the Ssangyong Tivoli and maybe the Dacia Duster, both of which have been available with diesel engines from launch. Starting prices considerably lower than Nissan Qashqai and Renault Kadjar.

My 2017 MG has excessive pitting on the rear discs - is this covered under warranty?
"When starting my 2017 MG GS from cold the rear pads do not seem to disengage fully resulting in a rubbing/grinding noise until they warm up. I have told I now have excessive pitting on my disks. Can I claim under warranty for this?"
I think MG will put this down to fair wear and tear. Excessive pitting on the discs are usually caused by the vehicle being parked up for long periods or used for lots of short trips. Over time, surface rust develops on the surface of the discs and causes corrosion that eats into the metal. You might want to consider having the discs cleaned when the vehicle gets its annual service.

Will the battery go flat if I stow away my MG GS for a month?
"Will my MG GS be okay being stowed away for a month or will the battery go flat and will I lose the radio code?"
It should be okay for a month, if you take it for a 20+ mile daytime run the day before you stow it away.
