Fumes on start up of Ford Focus?

I have a Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi registered in 2012 with just over 85k on the clock. I've noticed lately a strong smell of engine fumes when I start the car in the morning and the evening. I don't get the smell when I'm static in traffic.

What would be causing this please and what might need fixing?

Probably a blocked EGR that is not able to cope with the crankcase fumes. Common problem. But at 85k a lot of other things could be about to go, not least the DPF, the timing belt and the turbo.
