Why don't councils fix potholes more efficiently?

I saw your reply to SJ about damage to his car from a pothole. What we don’t know is how long it had been there. Councils will always hide behind weasel words such "as acted as promptly as possible". What really annoys me however is my local Council's inefficiency in dealing with potholes. They will come out and repair one or two at a time and often ignore others almost opposite or a few hundred yards away. Then back they come a second, third and fourth time to do further repairs.

On a stretch of road close to home that I use regularly, I counted over twenty potholes. Over the last few months the Council has been out five or six times and still haven't filled in all the significant holes. What an inefficient and costly way of dealing with the problem, when over the course of two days they could have filled them all. Yet another scandalous waste of taxpayers money.

The fact is that a combination of the pounding of vehicles over speed humps, frost damage, potholes and digging up of roads by utility companies has destroyed the substructure of many roads, so the only way to fix that is to dig the whole lot up to a depth of at least 12 inches and then start again. This is something our bankrupt country cannot afford unless it sells something, such as the Isle of Wight, to the Chinese. It would not be a good idea to borrow any more from the Chinese.
