Can you recommend a 4WD that can tow two tons for my tree surgeon son?

After 13 years trading, my son suddenly finds his firm with a cash-flow crisis and the need to sell his self-indulgent limo and buy a second hand 4WD vehicle able to tow up to two tons (a one-ton stump grinder and trailer). His tree surgery business is in trouble, so I should be most grateful for your experience-backed thoughts. He did mention a Mercedes-Benz.

A pick-up would be his best bet. A post 2007 Isuzu Rodeo double cab with the chain cam 16-valve I-TEQ engine is probably best and can haul 3 tonnes. If he's VAT registered, that also has tax advantages.
