Speeding - how long can the prosecution take?

How long do the police have to respond with a decision if they are to give you points or a speeding course? Surely there must be a time limit for them to reply once you've named yourself as a driver.

I'm afraid this can drag on. It's not subject to the same 14 day rule for the original NIP.
