Metriculous

I now live in France and have done for about three years. I still though think of fuel consumption in mpg. Trouble is, all I can get is the rather unwieldy l/100km. I've tried all the conversion factor websites that I can find but I can't find a formula that converts one to the other. Have I missed it or isn't there a straightforward formula?

The magic figure 282.481. For mpg to litres/100km: 282.481 divided by mpg, For litres/100km to mpg: 282.481 divided by litres/100km.
