What's a good car for a new driver?

My daughter has just passed her test but has only driven the instructor's Peugeot 308 and likes this a lot. We have a budget of up to £5000 - what car should she look at?

It's probably worth looking at something a little smaller than the 308. A Ford Fiesta would be a good choice with the 1.25-litre petrol engine (not the unreliable 1.0-litre EcoBoost) - there are lots about, so you can be picky about condition and specification. A Toyota Yaris would be another sensible choice, as would a Hyundai i20.
