Does the temperature gauge rise at all if you leave the engine running for a period of time but without driving anywhere?

I have the same problem on my Astra 2000. Temerature gauge works correctly when engine is at idle but returns to zero when car is in motion. I have had the sensor replaced, no difference. Help please.

Sounds like it needs a new thermostat. Pain to change though as you need to remove the cambelt to access it. Might be worth waiting till the next time the cambelt needs changing (every 40,000 miles/4 yrs - whichever is soonest)

Agreed its most probs the thermo, mine does the same not to much in summer when its warm but in winter the guage drops right back into the cold again when you put the heaters on (even goes right past the cold area, as if its off)- im waiting for my cam belt replacement though before i change it, as D Dave says, Vauxhall in there wisdom decided to put the thermo there instead of near the radiatior as they did before

Thinking about it, you may well be right. I was thinking of the 1.6 engine.

Anyway, via google, I found this for the X18XE1 / Z18XE engines:

Thermostat on my Astra has gone.

Noticed after the guage warmed up in traffic/when idle and droped when on the move.

National Auto Centres reckon £200 plus to replace because of having to replace the belt at same time.

Couple of sheets of cardboard wrapped in kitchen foil placed in front of the radiator (with small holes to alow air movement if the cooling fan kicks in) to control air flow and heat dissipation when on move has solved problem until time for the belt to be changed.

Couple of sheets of cardboard wrapped in kitchen foil ....

Thats the usual trick for the 1.6 8v engine to stop the dreaded mayonnaise problem in winter as the same radiator is used throughout the whole range of petrol engines and tends to overcool the engine.
