VW Golf MkIV 1.6 coil pack failure? - Matt A W
Dear all,

Just tried to start my Golf MkIV 1.6 16v and it's sounding like it's running on three cylinders. It's also smoking and is more difficult to start. Also the check engine light is flashing. Does the dreaded coil pack problem that is plaguing larger VAG engines affect this engine as well or is it likely something else?

TIA
Matt.

This car does have a coil pack ,but it is not the same as the problematic type fitted to otherVW/audi models.Silly question, have you checked engine oil level. We see lots of golfs with engine run probs ,&alot of them have no oil in engine!!!They seem to be oil burners rather than leakers, esp 2.0 8 valve.

I've had a good look uder the engine cover today and my car does have individual coil packs. They arn't the type that have been failing but they are made by the company Bremi. I'm fairly sure I've isolated the problem to the coil pack on cylinder 1 as disconnecting the fuel injector on this cylinder has no effect on the misfire.
I can't see how these units attach. They look as if they simply siton top of the plugs. Anyone know how you get these things off?

Thanks,
Matt.

My work colleage has a Golf 1.6S 02 reg and that had a loss of power problem. The dealer has just diagnosed faulty coil pack. If you want more details then let me know.

yes, Any extra info would be very greatly appreciated.

I'm trying to get my facts as straight as possible before getting the car to the dealers as it looks as though I won't be able to do this job myself. I'll try for a 'goodwill' gesture from VW given that this coil pack issue is a known fault but as my car is an import (and therefore out of warranty) I have always received a second rate service and therefore don't hold much hope.

Hi Matt,

The car was ready this morning at 10am; repair took less than an hour and car has 29K on the clock. This was a warranty repair, but the car had recently had a new manual gearbox under warranty too so he is not too chuffed about the car's reliability!

My work colleague has a neighbour with a 1.6SE 52 reg that also had the same problem and needed a new coil pack: engine starts but does not idle, or there is loss of power when on the move.
