The thrifty or sadistic fleet managers could even still buy a new Maestro (much to future Rover CEO Bernd Pischetsreider's dismay). Air conditioned cars were just filtering down to the lowly models, in car entertainment peaked at the new CD multichangers, and a 60-series tyre was still considered low profile.

  • Report: Peking to Paris, day 29 26 Jun 2013 (News)
Not everyone has enjoyed a trouble-free run today and the final days before we enter Paris are a nerve-jangling affair, we all are glad of some competition and driving great roads but equally our hearts are set on driving into Place Vendome mid-day on Saturday. Someone who hit trouble early on was the Ford Model A of Rod Wade in car 19 – he has run a big-end bearing, he has a spare and has taken the decision to get his car on a truck to Davos for repairs. It probably means the engine has to come out.

  • Report: Peking to Paris, day 17 14 Jun 2013 (News)
We spotted a fuming crew member of the Citroen DS having navigation problems driving the lift to the superb dinner tonight… never mind the lift buttons, the Citroen in the car park is showing signs of another hydraulic issue, this time the front is stuck in maximum height mode. Car 3, the Model T Ford of Nicky Bailey, continues to trundle along, but the driver reckons it's down on performance… he blames a batch of poor petrol. You can pick up 80 octane here, and whatever it says on the outside of the pump is no sure way of knowing what comes out of the pipe.
