  • Ford Focus - Starting Problems 10 Dec 2012 (Forum)
They linked it up to the diagnostic computer to look as to why she was struggling to start, it came up with Crankshaft Sensor and Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor faults. I also believe did a ECU upgrade to assist with starting issues, is this correct? Also the heater seems to take an awfully long time to get up to temperature, even though the temperature gauge on the engine is up to normal after about 10-15 mins of casual city driving.
  • VW T4 Caravelle - Faulty engine rebuild disaster - any comeback? 21 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Booked it into a local garage who took over a month to finally get it running ok. When I collected it the local garage said the timing was completely out and it had blown the ecu and cooked the glow plugs. The bill for their work came to £1200. Do you think I stand a chance of getting compensation from the rebuild garage by going back to them and stating they got the timing wrong which caused the starting issue?
  • Vauxhall Corsa C - Car will not start, Help please! 17 Mar 2012 (Forum)
It has run fine since then. I have changed the CPS and Cam Shaft sensor. I have drained the ECU also to try and reset this and remove any faults, with no affect. I have a spark at each plug, and appear to be getting fuel in the cylinder and if i relieve the fuel pressure at the injector rail it repressurises when next attempting to start.
  • Audi A6 Saloon - Oil Light 19 May 2011 (Forum)
V6 Engine runs smoothly, sounds as good as a diesel ever does, no oil leaks at all, oil level is always at max on the dip stick, oil changed using correct grade regularly and oil is acceptably clean on a spot test, steady oil temp on gauge when running, fuel economy is as good as ever, all fluid levels are OK and no sign or smell of anything abnormally hot, turbocharger can be heard spinning down sweetly when engine is turned off. How does the sensor transmit to the ECU is it an analogue voltage or digital signal, could something be interfering with it?
  • citroen xsara picasso - lost key 23 Oct 2010 (Forum)
Please can you help, i lost my car key a couple of weeks back and stupidly it was my only one, so on monday afternoon i managed to get it towed to the garage where i had a new key waiting, on arrival i was told it would take around 30 minutes to reprogramme, after about an hour an half i was sent away as it wouldnt work, and told they would try again tomorrow, the following evening i was called by the garage to be told they needed to order a coil to override the immobiliser or something along those lines at an extra 20 pound, on the wednesday they rang and told me the coil wouldnt work and theyd order a new key just in case the other was faulty which didnt work either, on the thursaday i spoek to them and they told me it was the wiring and my  car needed rewiring at a charge of 100 pound plus vat, which eventually i agreed to, so friday came and the garage rang me 1 minute before it shut and told me the rewiring hadnt worked and my computer needed a new ecu at a cost of 800 quid and the 160 pound for the work they had already completed which hadnt fixed my car so i dont agree i should have to pay this, theres no way i can afford 960 pound and the car is only worth 1500 roughly, please could you help me on where i stand i what action i should take next, when my car went to the garage it was worlking perfectly fine all that was wrong was id lost my key.
  • Volkswagen Golf 2.3 V5 2001 (y reg) - Buying Volkswagen advice 19 May 2010 (Forum)
been to see this car, it has had one lady owner from new. it's genuine miles, been serviced every year by the VW dealership. It's had new break callipers, new front coil springs in its last MOT. had new ecu 5 years ago because they were faulty on these models. everything that the MOT has showing up has been done. it's been well looked after, the car is in excellent condition. What should this car be valued at?
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 03 2.0hdi 90 go slow and surging 6 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I suppose the next step would be to find a decent fuel pressure regulator to check if that IS the problem. I've heard so many stories about dodgy ECUs, bad earthing etc that I'm not sure what to do. Any advice appreciated. I would really like to fix it myself and don't want to give up yet and take it to a mechanic. Cheers.....
  • Vauxhall Zafira A (1999 - 2005) - 03 2.0 glowplugs 25 Apr 2009 (Forum)
We took a family trip out and discovered that the cigarette lighter didn't work (trying to charge our sat nav). On our return I went to change the fuse, and inadvertantly pulled out the ECU fuse. realising my mistake, I instantly replaced it. The cigarette lighter fuse was indeed blown, so I started up the car to go and get a replacement. I got about 500 yards down the road and the car started chugging (safe mode?)
  • Citroen Xantia (1993 - 2000) - 00 2.0 HDi Fuel Problems 6 Apr 2009 (Forum)
He has checked, and claims fuel is getting as far as injectors, although he's getting a reading of 2 volts at the injectors, which he believes should be higher, can't remember what he said, but in the 5-7 volt area. He thinks ECU might be problem, but we believe that these are programmed to car, so might be pointless swapping it over. Reading forums there seem to be endless possibilities as to what problem might be. History: Fuel guage sender was faulty, so replaced low pressure pump, new unit, soon after purchase.
  • Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 00 2.0i stalls at junctions and when changing gear 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Local garage adjusted all sorts of throttle stuff, idle speed etc no better. then got a sensor low voltage message on the ECU. They replaced throttle body sensor for over £100, light went off BUT still stalls at junctions and when changing down. ie if you let the revs drop it does not stop at tickover, goes too far then bounces a bit and stalls even when rolling at 20mph.

  • Peugeot 306 1.8i 8v engine stuttering 7 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Having purchased the Haynes manual, I see that the fuel and ignition systems are closed loop controlled by the ECU, with nothing I can adjust, but I wonder if this could perhaps be an over zealous fuel cut off, or pressure regulator problem, that I could easily fix by component replacement? If anyone has any light they can shed from previous experience, I would be grateful to read it please, and cure the one problem that exists.
  • Starting a flooded engine! 24 Mar 2008 (Forum)
One is to take out all the plugs and let the neat petrol in the combustion chambers evaporate away. The other is to isolate the cold start instructions from the ECU to the engine (equivalent flooring the accelerator pedal to give a flooded non-cat car maximum air to sort the mixture out by ). However, this last method could damage the cat. HJ "
  • Suitable car for tall person with injured knee 7 Dec 2007 (Forum)
I'm seeking a car that is comfortable with excellent front seats and leg room, reliable (I live in a rural area with no sign of a bus service and the two faults that stopped my previous S80 in it's tracks - ETM and ECU - could easily strike again), economical and, with an automatic transmission. Budget? I could stretch to £10K but would prefer to part with about half of that if possible. Apologies for the life story but I thought some background information would explain why I am where I am and why I seek what I seek.
  • Colt vs Getz vs Swift 18 Jun 2007 (Forum)
It seems to be a very popular yet not so common car. My current car is a Hyundai Accent (which is fairly good other than niggling faults - ABS, ECU, E/W etc.) Still considering Getz for 5-yr warranty (though probably if I buy 1-yr old car will sell after 2 years). This is the first time I'm going to buy a new (or nearly new) car. Should I consider Jamjar/drivethedeal price as baseline for bargaining?
  • Car replacement/MOT problem 13 May 2007 (Forum)
My dad has a Ford Escort 1.6 zetec with MOT or tax though the engien is fine it has all sorts of ECU problems my uncle is looking into. I have a Ford Fiesta 1.1 HCS which we have both been using and have managed to get 2000 miles out of it. The MOT is due next month and the last couple of weeks the oil problem I have posted about before has got a lot worse.
  • Peugeot 306 1.4 1998 - hestitation 13 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Upon each replacement things seemed ok for a day or so but then it went back to its old ways ( is this some thing to do with the ecu relearning things?). Anyway I am at my wits end with this problem ( as well as the power steering pump going , the AC compressor clutch and the permanently blinking air bag light despite changing sensors ---- arrrrrrgh) Any helpful advice gratefully received.
  • RAC - whats going on 25 May 2006 (Forum)
next day rang vw and told them whats happening and said what the RAC had told me. they laughed and said there is no such thing as a turbo seal. got my mecanic round today, plugged his computer in, pressed a few buttons and reset the ECU and everything is now all fine and only cost me £35. considering i was expecting to pay in the region of £500 thanks to the patrolmans prediction. ANYWAY do these patrolmen actually know what they are talking about because the last two times they have been completly wrong and very far away from what is really wrong. might move to the AA
  • Nissan Primera Engine Management Fault 16 May 2004 (Forum)
The laatest thing my local mechanic has done is to fit some sheilding to prevent the ingnition causing interference with the ECU. This gas imprived things considerably, but not completely and I can't help thinking it's curing the symptoms rather than the root cause of the problem. One final diagnostic clue. When driving at nightI've noticed the headlights flicker intermittently and their is initially (i.e when engine is cold again ?)
  • Fiat Cinquecento problems 6 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Before I bought it it turns out it had the following parts replaced by a garage in an attempt to get rid of the problem which just wouldn't go away: Spark plugs, HT leads, 2 map sensors, complete single point injection unit, 2 temperature sensors, crank sensor, lambda sensor, and 3 ECUs. My Fiat dealer did a diagnostic test and recommended a new lambda probe (which I replaced). When this didn't work they took it in again and said that the computer kept telling them it was one fault and then the other (low battery voltage was a common theme).
