December saw the tenth consecutive fall in monthly new registrations – by 3.7% - but it still beat forecasts originally set by the SMMT in September. With many buyers opting to choose more fuel efficient models, sales of diesel and alternative fuel vehicles, such as electric or hybrid cars, reached a record high in 2011, taking a higher share of the market than petrol powered cars. Overall, fuel economy and emissions on new vehicles have decreased. -

HDi engine tops 10m in sales 10 Sep 2007 (News)
The French manufacturer, which was originally founded in 1976, has commented that the engine gives motorists "superior environmental performance, driveability and fuel efficiency". Peugeot Citroen commented: "The HDi family of engines has enabled PSA Peugeot Citroen to maintain and expand its leadership in diesel technology and to outpace the fast growth in diesel sales in Europe over the past ten years. -

It means that drivers filling up at any of Asda’s 217 forecourts nationwide will benefit from the retailer’s national price cap of 133.7 pence per litre on unleaded following a cut of up to 2ppl on unleaded. This follows last week’s cut on Diesel to 137.7ppl. Diesel fuel remains the same following last week’s 2 ppl litre price cut with Asda’s national price cap at 137.7 pence per litre which is 4 ppl cheaper than the national average diesel price. -

Mazda to build a Compression Ignition Petrol Engine with a 35% improvement in economy 8 Nov 2017 (News)
As part of its Skyactiv-X, the next generation of Skyactiv, Mazda is developing a Spark Controlled Compression Ignition petrol engine. Most of the combustion of the fuel/air is by compression, as in a diesel. But to achieve a stoichiometric ‘lean burn’ air-fuel ratio of 30:1 all the fuel in the combustion chamber needs to burn simultaneously. This is achieved by adding spark ignition. -

Peugeot 1.4HDI Diesel Now On Sale 7 Dec 2001 (News)
Peugeot has announced that its new 1.4 litre HDI engine (to be shared with Citroen and Ford) is now on sale with 70bhp in the 307 and will be available with 68bhp in the 206 from January. This new lightweight 98kg engine does not affect the handling of front-drive diesel cars to the extent of the older cast iron bock XUD engines. Fuel consumption on the combined drive cycle is 65.7 mpg for the 206 and 62.8 mpg for the 307. Carbon dioxide emissions levels for the 1.4 HDi 206 and 307 are the lowest in both vehicle ranges: 112 g/km and 120 g/km respectively. -
Hydrogen powered cars step closer to production reality 17 Jul 2013 (News)
Alongside the roll-out of these filling stations, Hyundai is ramping up the production of its ix35 fuel-cell electric vehicle (FCEV). It is to build 1000 by 2015 and aims to be able to produce 10,000 from 2015. Hydrogen cars can be refuelled in three minutes and have the same range as petrol or diesel cars, but with water as the only exhaust emission. -

'Which?' Challenges Electric Cars Zero Emissions Assertion 24 Feb 2011 (News)
has compared the carbon dioxide created by charging electric cars with that emitted by the most efficient diesel models and found that sometimes there's not a great deal of difference. The common manufacturer claim that electric cars produce 'zero emissions' ignores the fact that most drivers use a conventional electricity supply to charge them, which has a carbon cost from burning fossil fuels. -

The Department for Transport (DfT), which is responsible for the legislation, stipulates that alternative fuel vans must be powered by “electricity, natural gas, biogas or hydrogen or [a combination of] hydrogen and electricity”. Basically, the new legislation applies to vans that are not powered by petrol or diesel and weigh between 3500 and 4250kg. -
