  The 10-month-old 14k mile 2004/54 Renault Modus 1.5 dCi 80 Expression with a/c sold for £6,700, which looked pretty reasonable to me. £6,250 for a facelift 85k mile 2001/51 BMW 525iSE manual wasn’t bad either. But too many buyers, trade and public alike, continue to persist in propping up ‘status’ cars like Golfs. £8,700 for a 3 year old 42k mile 2002/52 Golf TDI PD 130 can only be justified because the market still regards it as a car that will make them look better than being seen driving a Ford.

  A 19k mile 2002/52 Nissan Terrano II SVE 7 seater with the rare 3.0DI engine sold for a sensible £13,500, and even came complete with a loadliner. A 3k mile 04 reg BMW E50 545iSE (what was that doing there?) sold for £34,000. A 95k mile one owner 93K Volvo 440 2.0GLT with eleven service stamps started at £50 but private bidders took it all the way to £400.

  I have to confess I missed quite a few today by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and some of the best weren’t catalogued. Like an 02 reg BMW X5 3.0d Sport with 88k miles on that, according to the driver, sold for “around £22,400”. An attractive pepper red 98R Mondeo 2.0LX estate with 163k but hiding them very well sold for £675.

  A 76k mile 2002/51 reg Audi A6 2.7T Quattro with a full service history of just two oil changes bid to £11,800 and didn’t sell. Quite a nice 55k mile 2001Y BMW 525iSE manual in silver bid to £12,200. And despite the presence of the new Golf Mk V, Mk IV GTIs still continue to make silly money. Like for an 80k mile 2001X GTI 1.8T 3-door, all of £8,000.

  And the legacy of Quentin Willson lived on in the £3,500 paid for a none too presentable 112,000 mile 94M BMW 325iSE. Probably the best bargains of the day were a 100,000 mile 99V Citroen Xantia 2.0 HDI 90 LX in a nice metallic blue, sold for £2,800. And a spotless yet 169,000 mile 1990G LPG converted Range Rover 3.9i Vogue SE auto that sold for just £1,450.

  An 81,000 mile 97R C200 Esprit facelift with the Spanish gearchange sold for £8,500, while a pair of C250TD Estates were not dear at £14,000 for the 76,000 mile 98S Elegance auto and £13,000 for the 50,000 mile 97P Classic manual with a/c. An ultra desirable 6,700 mile 2000X BMW 530D SE Steptronic, privately imported from Germany, stuck at £25,400 against trade guide for an official import of at least £28,500. So even if it came for £500 more it would have been an excellent buy.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given its security issues, the BMW topped the table, with the X6, M3, M5 and X5 all stolen for export by thieves. At the opposite end of the scale, the safest cars for theft was the Peugeot 508, the Saab 9-5 and the Skoda Roomster, with all three recording zero thefts between 2011 – 2012.
