  Other low bids included an 81k mile 99T Mercedes C240 Esprit auto, bid to £6,450, a 52k mile 99V Mercedes A170 Elegance auto bid to £7,000, a 63k mile BMW 523i auto with alloys and a/c sold for £10,400; a 72k mile 99V Daewoo Leganza 2.0CDX auto with leather sold for £2,750 and a 69k mile 97P KIA Mentor bid to just £475. Looking less like bargains because image still keeps their heads above the crowd were four VWs.

  The image and status stuff still surprises. Last weekend I was reading reports of old-shape BMW E36 Compacts finally taking a plunge. So I think I’m in with a chance with £4,500 for 97,000 mile 99T 318Ti with no sunroof, no a/c, no alloys and not much clear glass left in the windscreen.

  Scramble for Cars at Auction Today 24 Jul 2002 (News)
  An 18,000 mile 2001/51 reg new A4 2.0SE Tiptronic (not Multitronic) bid to £15,800. And there’s no such thing as a cheap BMW. A very early 120,000 mile E36 316i on a J still bid to £1,900; a 102,000 mile 96N (six year old) 318Ti Compact sold for £4,100; a 98,000 mile 97R M3 3.2 Evo sold for £12,000; a 73,000 mile 99T 323CI sold for £13,400; and a 19,000 mile 2000X 525iSE auto made it all the way to £19,200.

  Something for Everyone at Auction Today 10 Jul 2002 (News)
  Bidders went bananas for a 5,000 mile 2002/51 reg Audi TT 180 Coupe, taking it from £18,000 to a provisional £21,250. (What did they want? Blood?) A gravel peppered 80,000 mile 2000W BMW E46 323CI automatic coupe sold for £13,500. A manual 14,000 mile 2000V Chevy Blazer 4.3LS SUV sold for £9,650 (when do you ever see them at auction). Nissan was shifting 2000X Micra 1.0 S 3-doors with PAS for around £3,500.

  New Year Auction Fever Mounts 4 Jan 2002 (News)
  By 11.00 the halls were packed for the first dedicated fleet sale and I have to say it caught the mood of the morning, then built up the excitement brilliantly. First car in the sale was first to sell: a 51,000 mile 98S BMW 316i Compact, gone for a high £7,050. That was swiftly followed by a 100,000 mile 98S Avensis 1.8GS in a pretty metallic blue which went for £3,275. An 87,000 mile 98R Vectra 1.8LS sold for £3,000 and an 86,000 mile 98S Astra 1.6LS for £3,500.

  Sharp Falls At Auction Today 2 Nov 2001 (News)
  A clean Pepper red 98R Mondeo V6 Ghia with 96,000 under its wheels sold for a mere £3,800. Top bid for a 120,000 mile 98S BMW 523iSE was a paltry £6,900. A 129,000 mile 98S Volvo S70 2.5 20v with a/c only saw £3,650. A 91,000 mile 97P Audi A4 TDI 110 got to just £4,800. A 129,000 mile new shape 98S Astra 1.6 Club Estate stuck at £1,125.

  The names SE, Connoisseur, etc refer to the trim spec of the car, not the engine. Connoisseur is the most luxurious and desirable trim spec. The BMW engined CDI and CTDI are the most wanted models. The 2.5KV6 is okay. Avoid the 1.8, the 1.8T and the 2.0KV6.   Prolongs Active life We've had BMWs over the last 20 years but then changed to a 'new Golf' (Mk VII) in 2013.

  BCA had a very good entry today, including two 1930s Packards, a 1935 Dagenham assembled Ford Model 48 drophead coupe, a Ferrari 355, a Citroen ID, an Alfa Giulietta Sprint 1600 and plenty of other delights including a 1989 BMW Z1 that looked brand new. The Z1 made a strong £16,900, which with 11.75% commission came to £18,886.75, proving that good Z1s have hardly dropped at all over the past 10 years.

  Taxing one isn’t cheap, either - the V5 emits 211g/km of CO2, putting it into the same road tax bracket as a Jaguar X-TYPE V6 or a BMW 330i. Then there’s the fuel consumption - SEAT’s official figure was 32mpg, but around town you’ll be lucky to see 20mpg.  So why, then, is the Toledo V5 such an intriguing proposition?
