  • CBI CALLS FOR SCRAPPAGE SCHEME IN BUDGET 23 Mar 2009 (News)
John Cridland, CBI Deputy-Director General, said: "Scrappage schemes, at a relatively modest exchequer cost, would encourage consumers and businesses to replace old inefficient cars and vans, fridges and washing machines with the latest efficient models. "Not only would this bring forward consumer and business spending, it would also help reduce carbon emissions."
  • Hidden Heroes: BMW 318ti Compact 15 Nov 2019 (News)
It sold in fairly limited numbers, but was always a popular car on the used market.  In recent years, however, its appeal has gone from aspirational buyers to the car of choice for modifiers and drifters, which means that finding a decent 318ti Compact for sale today is pretty difficult - a situation not helped by the fact that the newest examples are now over 20 years old and corrosion is a fairly big problem, too.  If you can unearth a good one, then what you’ll end up with is a modern classic that’s great to drive, easy to own, cheap to run and more rewarding than you’d imagine.
  • A Grand Monday: Fiat Tempra, £375 16 May 2016 (News)
It’s hard to put your finger on exactly what this car has, but there is a certain something… The danger, of course, is its unpopularity. At such a low price, there’s every chance the vendor will simply give up and scrap it, or it might even get bought as a run-it-till-it-drops banger by someone who just needs a cheap set of wheels.
  • TVR's rights return to the UK 11 Jun 2013 (News)
TVR continued to offer parts and specialist support, and announced on its website in 2011 that the Sagaris could then be built to order, but series production never restarted, and as far as we know no new cars were completed. Smolensky threw in the towel in 2012, winding up the company after coming to the conclusion that a revival of TVR was not going to be financially viable, ending TVR’s continuous history as a car manufacturer since the formation of TVR engineering in 1947 to an end.

  • E 320CDI Bids Low at Blackbushe Today 14 May 2004 (News)
In the Motability section, top bid for a 5k mile 2003/53 A140 Classic 5-speed auto was just £8,800 and a 10k mile 2003/52 A140 Classic manual hit the buffers at £7,100. There were surprises in the Motability section, with some cars making more and some a lot less than I’d have expected. An old-shape 18k mile 2001Y Polo 1.4SE sold for a silly £4,800. Yet a new-shape 16k mile 2002/52 Polo 1.2E 65PS sold for £4,500.
  • Chevrolet Reveals 2011 BTCC Livery 26 Mar 2011 (News)
Both drivers have now tested the 2011 BTCC Cruze ahead of the season opener, and are extremely positive about the car’s prospects. “It’s even better than last year’s car,” said Jason Plato. “And we won the championship in that!” 20-year old Alex MacDowall, competing in his second season in BTCC, added: “I’m thrilled to be driving for Silverline Chevrolet again, and the car feels brilliant.
  • What is the new car sales crash and what does it mean for buyers? 5 Jan 2018 (News)
New car registrations are falling. Indeed, according to the industry trade body, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), new car sales dropped by almost six per cent in 2017, a decline not seen since the last recession, but what does it mean for car buyers in 2018?
  • Vintage Bentley reborn after being unearthed in London house 4 Sep 2015 (News)
The remains of a 1928 Bentley 4½ litre have been pieced back together after they were unearthed in a house in the middle of London. Parts of the car, which features Victor Broom Drophead coachwork, were strewn throughout the owner’s house. Now, the car has been fully rebuilt by Bentley specialist William Medcalf. Medcalf explains, ‘About a year ago, a very nice lady called and said her father has passed away and that he had a couple of old cars in his house, one of which was a Bentley.’ William headed to the house near Kew Gardens and as soon as he arrived he began to spot bits of the car spread throughout the house.
  • Chris Evans has a clear-out for Goodwood Revival auction 17 Aug 2015 (News)
Let’s face it, he’s not been short of publicity this summer, following the recent announcement that he’s to present Top Gear from 2016 – and now Chris Evans is at it again, this time hitting the headlines for having a major clear-out of his garage. But instead of taking old paint tins to the tip or throwing out a few oil cans, he’s auctioning off thirteen classic cars from his world-famous collection. If we’re being pedantic, it’s actually the auctioneers from Bonhams who will be carrying out the auction, which takes place on 12 September at the Goodwood Revival.
  • Rovers Not Cheap at Auction Today 27 Apr 2005 (News)
A 52k mile 2000W 75 2.5 Connoisseur SE auto with satnav bid to £5,250, which isn’t bad for a 5 year old. While the auctioneer wisely turned down a top bid of £7,500 for a 4,000 mile 2003/53 75 2.0 CDTI Connoisseur auto that would have flown out of any showroom for £9,995. (If you want the car it should come up again in the Snows Group section.)
  • Sudden Shortage Forces Auction Prices Up 11 Sep 2002 (News)
But the general level of prices can vary from week to week, sometimes by huge amounts. Last Wednesday there were plenty of cheap cars at Blackbushe. This Wednesday if felt like dealers were bidding hard to secure stocks in anticipation of a shortage. It seems that the public hasn’t taken too well to the idea of a 52 plate on its cars.

  • A Grand Monday: Citroen CX Familiale 23 Oct 2017 (News)
You'll need to check the underside carefully to make sure there's nothing truly horrendous under there, but on the other hand its not unreasonable to expect a 27-year old Citroen to have seen the warm end of a welding torch by this stage. The car has spent its life in London, so has probably seen less exposure to salty motorways than most (which may explain why it has even survived this long), while an extensive history with respected Citroen specialists at least suggests it has been sympathetically maintained.  It'll probably need a power steering pump before its next MoT, too, and unless you're handy with hydraulics, that's probably a £300-400 job.  But even so, CX Familiales fall into the 'hen's teeth' category of rarity, and this one is strikingly and temptingly cheap...
  • Restored Volkswagen Samba campervan to go under the hammer 22 May 2017 (News)
A rare 1959 Volkswagen 23-window Samba campervan is heading to auction. The camper, which has been restored, is part of the Classic Car Auctions sale in Warwickshire on 10 June. The right hand drive, manual example is believed to be one of just a handful on UK roads and looks like it has just rolled off the line at the German factory.
  • 1966 Mini Cooper 1275S Makes £31,000 at Historics 3 Sep 2015 (News)
A rare 1990 Alfa Romeo SZ sold for £26,000. An ultra-rare 1961 Alfa Romeo Formula One single seater with FIA papers sold for £60,000 and the newest car amongst the consignments, a 2006 Ferrari F430 Spider, made £70,000 and might not drop any lower, representing a reasonable 9 year old investment for its new owner. The 1973 Iso Fidia that had languished in a barn since the mid 1980s and needed very expensive restoration changed hands for a £6,250.

  • Official 20% Off Hyundai Getz 11 Aug 2008 (News)
There will be some buyers who can’t manage to find the deposit though – perhaps because their old car has just failed its MoT or the savings have just been spent on a holiday. So as an alternative the second offer requires no deposit at all. The first payment would be £285, followed by £139 per month for 35 months.
