And the chancellor’s determination to tackle that debt mountain is having a severely detrimental effect on the used car trade. Which is why next week could be a very good week to buy. As fleet finance people see there’s no percentage in hanging on, lots of cars that appear week after week at lower and lower bids may finally have to be disposed of.

Shortage of Stock Keeps Auction prices High 22 Jan 2003 (News)
Activity is amongst the most frenetic auctioneers can remember for a January and more buyers than cars are keeping prices up. But the 12 year old Soarer Coupe in the photo was a luxury most of us could still afford. Its cloth seats went against it, as well as 137k plus a speedo change, but it was still a lot of flash for £2,975 cash.
  • Auction Prices Begin to Rise 30 Nov 2001 (News)
Though high mileage cars are still rock bottom, there was plenty of evidence today that values of prime sensible mileage stock are starting to rise. Not all traders were prepared for this, which led to some protracted bidding battled today after cars started low only to sell for very solid money.
  • Fancy a Reliant bodyshell for £1? 9 Jun 2015 (News)
'Even the Rialto, once considered too new to be a classic and too old to compete against the expensive late-model Robins, has been rising in price – particularly the estate and van versions,' admits Joe. 'Hopefully this will result in more restoration projects getting under way in the future, so if anyone needs a secondhand bodyshell they know where to come.'
  • Two Ferrari Spyders in Historics 6th June Auction 2 Jun 2015 (News)
Cockpit, dashboard and moulded door panels in an exclusive blue carbon fibre continue the look inside the car. Redesigned seats in Alcantara with contrasting stitching complement the appearance of the Aperta production of which was limited to just 499. With just 400 kilometres on the odometer, this rare and unrepeatable Ferrari (now that 458 production has ended) is estimated at £450,000 to £550,000.
  • Goodwood Revival 2014 to honour Sir Jackie Stewart 9 Aug 2014 (News)
Already making waves in sportscar racing, Stewart was spotted testing in early 1964 by Goodwood track manager Robin Mackay, who helped to arrange a Formula Three trial at the circuit with Ken Tyrrell’s team that went on to open the door to worldwide stardom for the then 24-year-old young Scottish racer. The very Cooper T72-BMC he drove during that test is one of 24 cars that will form of the tribute to Stewart. His three Formula 1 World Championship titles will be marked by a 1969 Matra MS80-Cosworth and a Tyrrell 006 of 1973 period.
  • Alfa Romeo takes victory in the Rally of The Tests 8 Nov 2013 (News)
They didn’t have an easy run though and had to overcome electrical problems in their Alfa on the prologue and first day. However, they managed to recover and come first across the finish line at the Old Swan Hotel, in Harrogate, in front of a cheering crowd. Jan Ebus and Iain Tullie in their Porsche 356 led for much of the event but a few uncharacteristic mistakes in the final sections allowed the Alfa Romeo to take the lead.

  • CBI CALLS FOR SCRAPPAGE SCHEME IN BUDGET 23 Mar 2009 (News)
John Cridland, CBI Deputy-Director General, said: "Scrappage schemes, at a relatively modest exchequer cost, would encourage consumers and businesses to replace old inefficient cars and vans, fridges and washing machines with the latest efficient models. "Not only would this bring forward consumer and business spending, it would also help reduce carbon emissions."
  • Hidden Heroes: BMW 318ti Compact 15 Nov 2019 (News)
It sold in fairly limited numbers, but was always a popular car on the used market.  In recent years, however, its appeal has gone from aspirational buyers to the car of choice for modifiers and drifters, which means that finding a decent 318ti Compact for sale today is pretty difficult - a situation not helped by the fact that the newest examples are now over 20 years old and corrosion is a fairly big problem, too.  If you can unearth a good one, then what you’ll end up with is a modern classic that’s great to drive, easy to own, cheap to run and more rewarding than you’d imagine.
  • A Grand Monday: Fiat Tempra, £375 16 May 2016 (News)
It’s hard to put your finger on exactly what this car has, but there is a certain something… The danger, of course, is its unpopularity. At such a low price, there’s every chance the vendor will simply give up and scrap it, or it might even get bought as a run-it-till-it-drops banger by someone who just needs a cheap set of wheels.
  • TVR's rights return to the UK 11 Jun 2013 (News)
TVR continued to offer parts and specialist support, and announced on its website in 2011 that the Sagaris could then be built to order, but series production never restarted, and as far as we know no new cars were completed. Smolensky threw in the towel in 2012, winding up the company after coming to the conclusion that a revival of TVR was not going to be financially viable, ending TVR’s continuous history as a car manufacturer since the formation of TVR engineering in 1947 to an end.

There were surprises in the Motability section, with some cars making more and some a lot less than I’d have expected. An old-shape 18k mile 2001Y Polo 1.4SE sold for a silly £4,800. Yet a new-shape 16k mile 2002/52 Polo 1.2E 65PS sold for £4,500.

  • Vintage Bentley reborn after being unearthed in London house 4 Sep 2015 (News)
The remains of a 1928 Bentley 4½ litre have been pieced back together after they were unearthed in a house in the middle of London. Parts of the car, which features Victor Broom Drophead coachwork, were strewn throughout the owner’s house. Now, the car has been fully rebuilt by Bentley specialist William Medcalf. Medcalf explains, ‘About a year ago, a very nice lady called and said her father has passed away and that he had a couple of old cars in his house, one of which was a Bentley.’ William headed to the house near Kew Gardens and as soon as he arrived he began to spot bits of the car spread throughout the house.
  • Chris Evans has a clear-out for Goodwood Revival auction 17 Aug 2015 (News)
Let’s face it, he’s not been short of publicity this summer, following the recent announcement that he’s to present Top Gear from 2016 – and now Chris Evans is at it again, this time hitting the headlines for having a major clear-out of his garage. But instead of taking old paint tins to the tip or throwing out a few oil cans, he’s auctioning off thirteen classic cars from his world-famous collection. If we’re being pedantic, it’s actually the auctioneers from Bonhams who will be carrying out the auction, which takes place on 12 September at the Goodwood Revival.
