  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.6 Creaking suspension ?? What could it be? 15 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I went back to garage next day to ask if they could tell me why it started after they had fitted tyres, his answer was to spray the front suspension with WD40 and send me on my way. Now after 2 weeks of driving just locally, my car sounds like i'm driving 'an old metal bedstead'..it creaks really badly on all turns now and I can even hear it on straight roads, although not as loud. Could this be the anti roll bar bushes have been damaged, or messed up with the salt & grit from snow or something much worse & am I causing more harm by continuing to drive it ??
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 06 1.6 Does this fuel consumption sound correct? 8 Feb 2010 (Forum)
On longer journeys of around 220 miles I am getting about 36-38mpg at 70mph. The engine is idling at around 9000rpm (when warm) which seams high compared to my old 51 plate 1.6 Corrolla, plus if I coast to a ?stop? the Focus continues to drive forward, albeit very slowly, when in 1st gear without me touching any peddles ? all previous car I have had would of stalled.
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 1996 Rear Suspension Corrosion 29 Oct 2009 (Forum)
It had an MOT in Feb -my MOT man doesn't usually miss anything! They appear to carry the whole weight of the rear of the car. Looks like a complete rear suspension-off job to fix. It's quite a surprise when the bodywork is in such good nick - 106's don't seem to rust where you can see it..... Has anyone else found the same - or worse?
  • First frost, quickclear and a new Fiesta? 19 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Mondeo had a new windscreen in the summer, stone damage, the quickclear on the old one had a couple of inactive bands though still worked OK, first frost this morning, had to be out before 8:00, started the engine, heated front and rear screen on, we were off in less than a minute.
  • Honda CR-V (1997 - 2002) - 99 2.0 Rubbing sound/High pitch whine sound 5 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Hi new to this, but finaly today plucked up courage to buy crv 1999, it has 62k miles, looks pretty clean, but i have a couple of issues i need some help with please, First off there is a rubbing sound from the left hand wheel only, not the right, but it only occurs when i turn harder, i had broken cv joints in old car and it doesnt remind me of that awful clicking sound, just a bit concerened, the right tyre has a whipping sound as it rotates, only when applying accelaration, not when idle, comes and goes not often maybe every 15 mins, any ideas.
  • Driving in Norfolk 4 Oct 2009 (Forum)
The new invention the "single carriageway dual carriageway", i.e. what were obviously built as good old fashioned stretches of dual carriageway with one of the lanes chevroned off guarded by solid no overtake lines. And signed up as "dual carriageway" and "single lane traffic only". Some anti car nutters idea of a good way to run a road system no doubt.
  • diesel in a petrol mower 24 Aug 2009 (Forum)
(Ok so I know this is ment to be a car forum...) I've been given a small 3.5hp petrol powered mower only a couple of years old. The gilfriend's dad gave it me after it cut out on him when he mistakenly filled it with diesel from a can. He said it ran for a couple of min, lost revs, then stalled.
  • Renault Espace (1997 - 2002) - 02 Air Conditioning not working. 20 Jun 2009 (Forum)
My 2002 Renault Espace Race 2.2 DCI is 4 & 1/2 years old with 45K and has been owned by me from new. 2 months ago the air conditioning (with climate control) stopped working. I took it to Kwik Fit who offer a re gasssing service at £44.95. They confirmed there was little or no gas left in the system and set about re-charging it - a process that took about 1 hour.
  • Toyota Avensis (2009 - ) - Odometer / Speedo accuracy 16 Apr 2009 (Forum)
My old car, 2006 Avensis 2.0 diesel speedo read 62 mph when my Tomtom read 60 mph and a regular over the same route measured 108 miles on the odometer. I took delivery of a 2009 Avensis 2.0 diesel recently, the speedo reads 65 mph when the Tomtom reads 60 mph and the regular run over the same route reads 110 miles on the odometer.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - Vectra estate at £5995 - any good? 27 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I need a big family estate - to replace our fantastic Avensis est which at 10 years old and 150,000 is starting to feel its age. The Toyota has been great and I would buy another except that Drive the Deal is doing 08 Vectra 1.8 Life est with 18K for the above price. This seems like an extraordinary bargain.
  • Volkswagen Polo III (1994 - 1999) - 96 1.4 Lumpy running 13 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The problem is the engine is really running rough now and it definately not running on all 4 cylinders. I took off the distributor cap and gave it a good clean - no change. I then changed it for an old one I had when I changed the cap last year - no change. My next line of enquiry will be to take the plugs out and check them to see if they are sparking. The only thing bothering me is I seem to recall that using jump leads on the car could sometime cause the electronic 'brain' to stop working properly.
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - Compare 7 seater models 5 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Good afternoon I am looking to replace my old 406 (HD1 90) estate with one of the following models as I need a 7 seater estate but with reasonable economy. The 2 models I have seen are 2002 (52 plate) ? 2.0 TD HDI 110 SE - approx 100000 miles on the clock & an 2004 1.6 HDI 110 S (AC) approx 70000 miles on the clock (does the AC stand for air con?)
  • Volvo 740/760 (1984 - 1990) - Bangernomics, how low can you go? 26 Sep 2008 (Forum)
inernet price for comprehensive insurance of £104, so including the VED and allowing a few pounds for a can of supermarket oil & a filter, my fixed overheads are likely to be less than £9 per week. (obviously at 23 years old depreciation is nil, market value is only a little over scrap value) Is it possible to run a car (legally) any cheaper than this?
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 1997 MKIII, 2L GTI - turns over doesn't fire up 4 Apr 2008 (Forum)
My ten 11 year old Golf has finally caused me a problem. It has been driving perfectly for years until yesterday. I turned the key in the ignition and the engine turned over but failed to fire up. Trying to jump-start the car didn't work either.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1998 1.3 - Engine trouble 22 Feb 2008 (Forum)
1242cc 16v 1998/R reg Hi, My engine had seized up so I bought another one (exactly the same even down to the year of manufacture) and fitted it. Upon attempting to start the car it is cranking but not firing. This cant be an ECU problem because the engine is exactly the same as the old one even down to the year. We have identified the most probable cause being no fuel getting to the engine, the reason being that upon disconnecting the injector pipes only minimal fuel drips out where it should be considerably greater, somewhat squirting out.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2.2 TDCi-Smokes when accelerating/economy not good 31 Oct 2007 (Forum)
My 2.2 TDCi Titanium estate had to have a new engine, turbo, catalytic converter, oil cooler etc in August, after the turbo allowed sump oil into the combustion chambers. The car was ten months old and had covered just 17,500 miles. If I had to pay the bill, it would have been £7,800.00. This new engine runs much better than the last, however since I got it back it produces loads of exhaust smoke under hard acceleration and I struggle to get more than 35 mpg, even though most of my motoring is on an autoroute/motorway at sensible speeds.
  • Volvo 940 (1992 - 1997) - 94 2.3 turbo, your opinions would be most welcome 18 Oct 2007 (Forum)
The seller assures me that everything has been done when it should have been. When I say mint-looking, I mean mint-looking. There's no dents or rust (then again, wasn't this car galvanised?) and the engine bay look clean with no apparent oil leaks. The seller is asking in the region of £350. I've always fancied a big old Volvo but what are spares prices like? How about likely garage bills?
  • Rover 200 and 400 (1989 - 1996) - - Battery drain problem? 30 Aug 2007 (Forum)
t=42212&m=462049&v=e I have since bought a new alternator Due to electrics problems, I bought myself an internal volt meter, which enables me to see the voltage as I drive the car. I bought a new battery the other day thinking that my previous one was getting abit old now, so that may be a weak point. For the first day or so of having the new battery, whilst driving, the voltage showed 13-13.5 volts.
  • Oil Contamination Problem-Renault Scenic 16 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Wonder if anyone could help out on this one for me. I have an R reg Renault Scenic 1600 with the K7M engine, ally head, cast block. I bought the car with supposedly the head gasket gone, should have been no problem for me to sort as I am an ex Renault technician. I have changed the head gasket and the head twice ( I have changed the head, to make sure there was no internal crack in the head).
  • Fixed price servicing - what to expect? 25 Jan 2007 (Forum)
My car has done low mileage (<5k pa) and is now out of warranty and I'm wondering about the value of these services, especially if certain parts like filters, plugs etc. aren't actually being changed due to the low mileage.
